Participants
Here we can discuss and make decisions on strategies that directly affect who the participants are that end up at our gathering. Towards these ends there are two things folks can do to participate in this thread:
1. Populate this cryptpad
With instances that are thought to be democratically run or interested in being democratically run so we may reach out to them and we can keep track of who has been reached out to. There are lists of potential instances here and here
2. Contribute to identifying strategies that could be used to ensure we have a diverse set of voices represented at the gathering
It seems like there isn't enough thought about this matter or consensus within our group about how to deal with the issue so we can develop thinking and commit to action in this thread. A starting point that was brought up in our first poll was: we should make it clear that diverse voices are welcome.

Thanks for putting this here - we should copy items over from this wiki: https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fediparty/wiki/Collectively-owned-instances

Do you know if the the fediparty list explicitly covers the suggestions that came from your toot as I compiled here: https://cloud.biotechwithoutborders.org/s/7aZbn953NtwKPn9

Compiling a list and inviting folks to participate as a strategy to increase diversity of participants at our gathering Closed Fri 20 Jan 2023 4:01AM
2 fewer votes here than in the last poll might mean that the shorter deadline to participate in this poll is not conducive to more voices being present. It could also mean some people got busy in the intervening time between polls and cannot contribute to this organizing.
In any case, the feedback makes me realize that there are probably two separate issues to address here and that we may not have enough active individuals to cover both before Decent Social. Nevertheless I think it's important to try and disambiguate and refine these two issues as they are both part of an overall strategy regarding a 2023 gathering.
We need more voices invited to the gathering, period. The comment above already sets us on a path towards that goal
We need to ensure that diverse folks feel welcome joining a gathering and that this work may have to be done before inviting broadly.
I recall that on the Matrix chat a concern about the homogeneity of our group (mostly white cis men) was raised and this was also voiced on the matrix chat for Decent Social.
I think explicitly trying to address this concern is a good idea.
In that matrix room it was expressed that identifying groups that could be invited is a strategy to increase diversity. We have fragmented lists in the comments above. Do folks think that using a list compiled from the resources above and sending out invitations for a 1:1 chat and/or invitations to join the Loomio is a viable strategy for us to take to begin to address the issue of a lack of diversity?
(I'm making this poll anonymous and requiring an reason for voting because I think this might help us articulate more unfiltered thoughts without fear of it coloring other interactions we are trying to have with the group the way folks)

We should act with information we have. Even if this isn't the best strategy to increase diversity we don't even know the mix of folks until we try and reach out. So I think compiling a list and reaching out is a good idea. But I am aware strategies to address diversity better will likely still be required.

get invites out through existing coalition chat rooms, #MastoAdmin and #MastoMods, and solicit on the #AskFedi hashtag

I'm not sure that contacting all the server operators will by itself create more diversity. Could make it clear that it would be great if more diverse voices were encouraged to be involved in conversations / events.

I started this collaborative spreadsheet a while back so people could work together on a list of instances and record if theyd been contacted
