There were no queuing issues last year. Most people seemed to fill large containers and decant later.

One of my camp members knows people who work in water testing professionally and is going to get in touch with them regarding what is best practice in these situations.

We're happy to take on the task of looking into what tests need to be done, ordering them and doing the tests. Depending on how much this costs, we might ask for contributions from other people who think this would be worthwhile.

For those who can't find the post or are not on Facebook:
Option 5: Drink from the spring. Risks from this fall into three basic categories: Heavy metals and minerals, bacteria and viruses and protazoa and oocysts. Alex is testing for the first two and will let us know the results. Filtering will take out most minerals (excluding nitrates which are water soluble. I tested for them last year and it was well within safe limits. They are only really an issue for small children). Purification tablets or UV (after filtering so the water's clear) will kill viruses or bacteria. If both of these are within safe levels you don't necessarily need to do anything. Unfortunately the third category is rare but can be incredibly serious. Protazoa and oocysts are parasites and hibernate in forms that cannot be killed by UV or iodine, and the test for them require filtering 1000 litres of water. They can be removed using 1 micron filters (not all filters are made alike, read the labels!). Incidences are rareish (<500 cases of Cryptosporidium and ~1000 cases of Giardia each year in the South West), and it is worth noting that the water supplies properties on the estate without filtering. Risks are slightly higher because some of the land above the spring is used for sheep grazing.
If you are going this route, be informed. I can point you at some filter suppliers, or people are welcome to run water through our filter rig (down to 0.5 micron with UV). Rigs cost about £300. I can highly recommend roller water tanks - last year Aldi had them rather cheap.

I'm confused at what difference you see Martin. Alex will test for Heavy metals and minerals, bacteria and Viruses. The only thing he won't test for is protazoa and oocysts. Do you read the comment differently?

Simon, just clarifying for those who won't have seen Case's post that the water will have been partly tested and that filtering and purification will still be required to make it safe ('safe' as in can I offer this water to other people in the complete confidence that they'll not suffer any consequences).
Actually, I take Case's point that hand-washing and good sanitation is probably more important, as discovered in the dreadful year of Nowhere shigella.

Any news on the water testing results? As this will affect how much water, if any, some people will order.

Hi Ruthie, a couple of people have taken on the project and contacted the vendor from last year to gauge their appetite for doing it again this year (they're a small local company and we represent a pretty big job). As soon as they know, they'll hatch a plan to sort orders/payment out and communicate through the usual channels (including me emailing theme camp leads).

We've had prices back from the supplier of last year's communal water order, a local water company Pure Dartmoor.

Prices

• 19 Litre bottles for £6 each.
• 13 Litre bottles for £5 each.
• Water Pumps for £12.50 each.

These are the same prices as last year, with the additional 13 Litre option added to help with carrying the bottles around site since they have a handle.

Delivery would be made on the Saturday 18th to hydrate those involved in Build. Collection would be made after Strike (TBD). Depending on order volumes a mid-event collection/delivery may still be required (TBD).

Leave No Trace

As with last year this is delivery of water but also collection of the empty bottles at the end of the event for them to be cleaned and reused. Purchasing water at retail might be slightly cheaper but it will result in a lot of plastic recycling.

Also anyone who bought a pump last year can consider them an investment since the will be re-usable again this year, although please ensure they are properly cleaned first.

Order Process

To get an indicative size of order please use dot vote to indicate how many 19 Litre Bottles, 13 Litre Bottles and Water Pumps you or your camp are likely to order. This will help me schedule with the supplier.

Assuming a good level of interest I'll have a google form for collecting orders and monzo.me link for collecting payment within a week.

When full the 19L bottles are quite heavy to manage, so the hand pump allows the weaker of us - like me - to get the watery goodness out easily.

What, each individual in a theme camp order their own? It would be more sensible to combine your order, especially if you're already doing communal budgety things.

Paula, it will depend on what your camp is organising. If you're all ordering your water separately then yes, you'll have to each order your own water.
Note, this poll isn't the actual order, just an attempt by us to find out the general quantities required so that we can organise the deliveries with the company.

The Dead Insides camp won't need most of the water till Wednesday, of that helps coordinate things with the company?

Paula - if you're part of a camp you will have to ask your own camp about what their water plans are.

I don't know if it's too early for this question but do you have an idea of when the water will be delivered to site? This info will inpact how much i would order.

It's likely to be in two deliveries as the company we're dealing with is uncomfortable with having that many bottles out at one time. So far we're aiming for Saturday and Wednesday or Thursday
