12 New NIOP Devices
Proposal for NIOP Project Funding
The No-Insurance Optimized Prosthetic (NIOP) system is a set of modular components based on the Kwawu arm by Jaq Buchanan.
This proposal covers twelve separate upper limb prosthetic designs to add to the NIOP modular arm catalog. This includes three different bionic/motorized hands that can all be exchanged with the push of a button, and components that will allow the NIOP system will fit most types of upper limb difference. It also will give e-NABLE an initial design for stroke recovery.
I'm a professional contract CAD Designer by trade, with 27 years of experience. I have worked with quite a few Fortune 500 firms on many major infrastructure projects and taught CAD at Metro State College of Denver. In 2017, I had my right arm amputated. After my experience with exorbitantly overpriced prosthetist-designed prosthetics, I vowed to change the system if I could, at least for myself and Shelby, the namesake of the Shelbow. That’s what brought me to e-NABLE.
As a prolific inventor and now a newly reborn musician, my experience with e-NABLE convinces me that I am uniquely positioned to help e-NABLE make an unprecedented set of contributions to the world of upper-limb prosthetics.
These proposed NIOP devices will more than triple the number of designs in the current NIOP catalog, bringing it to a total of seventeen different modules. These designs, when used in different combinations will be able to address almost every situation for upper limb difference, adapt to parts from professional devices, a simple bionic hand, and also provide the e-NABLE community with the Exo-Glove for people living with MS or are recovering from a stroke.

Happy to be part of this work. A modular system is the right solution that's been a long time coming.
I know it''s not part of your plan, but there's a need as well for a modular hand design, for those with at least part of a palm and perhaps varieties of remaining fingers or parts thereof. I have run into that at least twice recently - once with no solution.

Nate has shared ideas freely and also taken suggestions from experienced e-NABLE volunteers (Eric, Jon, Jack, etc.} To make the best product he can. He also shares the Fusion files and encourages remixes. A trans-humeral device is often requested and this device has great potential to be adapted to the needs of many

I've already delivered the Milestone 1 goals, and I'm working with a team in Syria who is actively prototyping the Exo-Shoulder and Humeral Conductor to tighten up the tolerances on the connections where the thermoformed parts match up. Everything is on schedule so far and proceeding nicely.
The main safeguard is that I don't get paid until the devices are delivered for each milestone, just like I do for my professional CAD clients on lump sum bids. My ethics and integrity are maybe my strongest qualities, and they've served me well being in business almost 25 years.
Like I stated in the proposal, I'm committed to this work regardless of the time it takes. So far my estimates have been pretty solid, although I almost always will spend extra time when it's required to make a product great. We'll inevitably be making revisions as the designs are released and the community gets involved, but that's a normal part of the vetting process and we'll address those issues as they come up like I've done with the past NIOP projects.
