GSoC 2015

JR Jason Robinson Public Seen by 47

So, GSoC is open to organizations and the deadline is February 20 at 19:00 UTC (11am PST).

http://google-opensource.blogspot.fi/2015/02/mentoring-organization-applications-now.html

If someone who knows the diaspora* source and architecture well enough wants to mentor, please speak up and lets apply :) No point in discussing whether we "should" apply, of course we should - but someone needs to volunteer as a mentor before anything else makes sense to be discussed.

@augier - during this period, we don't have holidays in india either. but a lot of students do participate in gsoc and they performs well. so I don't think that the lack of holidays will be a problem.

@jasonrobinson @ @praveenarimbrathod today(20-02-2015 19:00 UTC (11am PST)) is the last date to submit the application. I think we should hurry if we haven't submitted the application yet.

Sorry everyone about not moving with the application. Been sick for last 3 days. I will draft it tomorrow as early as possible. Then gather some issues too and post here. But I will have to send the application asap without waiting too much for discussion regarding the list of issues - deadline.

If anyone wants to help list issue links here WITH a little description (one-two lines on what the aim is) too, that would be awesome, thanks. I think we should avoid huge things like API, etc... Those things cannot be done by some people coming outside from the project for a few months. The issues need to be easy take take on.

@hrishikeshakastult it's 19.00 UTC, plenty of time ;)

@hrishikeshakastult Many universities have holidays in india during summer.

StultuS Fri 20 Feb 2015 3:14AM

@akashagrawall - I don't think that you'll get the whole three months. I was an org admin and mentor for the past two years. every student were balancing gsoc and classes (even exams were there for a few of them) and they did it pretty well.

the point is, you CAN do gsoc even if you have classes in summer :)

Your application process is now complete. Good luck! You can modify your answers before 2015-03-02 00:00:00.

AND WITH 32 MINUTES TO SPARE!!

Thanks @dumitruursu for the help :)

The ideas list is here: https://wiki.diasporafoundation.org/GSoC_2015

It could use some love. I just chose, in panic, some of the most requested sane features. Feel free to remove / edit / improve. But PLEASE, keep the same kind of formatting and put a description for the issue. Also I still don't think putting things which require extreme knowledge in the diaspora* code into this list. Like API, etc.

Dumitru Ursu Fri 20 Feb 2015 6:38PM

This is acceptable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlTROLe5ngc

Also, you forgot @augier. He lend a helping hand too.

AA

@hrishikeshakastult True that. :)

@hrishikeshakastult : Thank you for the tip. So, in this case, I think I ca apply for the GSoC if the mentors @dumitruursu and @jasonrobinson accepts me ! :D

JR

Jason Robinson Sat 21 Feb 2015 9:19AM

@augier what about mentoring instead? ;)

DU

Deleted account Sat 21 Feb 2015 3:13PM

I don't think I know d* enough to be a mentor :p
And I don't think it is paid the same :D

JR

Jason Robinson Sat 21 Feb 2015 4:09PM

@augier if you just want to get paid then you can code for any project ;) You already contribute to diaspora* and as such what would be the benefit to the project in having you as our student? ;)

DU

Deleted account Sat 21 Feb 2015 4:36PM

It's not only being paid. It will be no different than when I usually contribute except I might take 2 or 3 weeks of holiday to work on this and I will be paid to do what I love ;)

But if it causes trouble, I won't do it, it is no problem to me ;)

I'll have a look at the wiki page and try to complete it.

JR

Jason Robinson Mon 23 Feb 2015 8:49PM

@flaburgan what about mentoring? Find 2-3 tasks you'd be fine with mentoring and add yourself as a possible mentor? :)

DU

Dumitru Ursu Mon 2 Mar 2015 7:56PM

I just received an email - it seems that we haven't been accepted :( We should ask this Friday why is that so (on #gsoc), and how can we improve our application for the next year.

JR

Jason Robinson Tue 3 Mar 2015 8:37PM

It's a shame but I'm kinda not too surprised. Our application was done in a rush, had only two people linked to it (= not enough mentors) and our issue list wasn't very well constructed (= made in a rush).

Next year lets do a proper job. Calendar event set for next Autumn to start calling out to mentors :)

Thanks @dumitruursu and @augier for help on this application!

This GSoC is special. Mozilla was not selected too!

Wut ?

S

StultuS Fri 6 Mar 2015 2:18PM

so is Tor and Linux - both rejected

AA

Akash Agrawall Fri 6 Mar 2015 4:27PM

Even google-melange didn't apply this time since the number of organizations to be selected were very less.

JR

Jason Robinson Sat 7 Mar 2015 7:34PM

This is going OT, but I don't really see the fuss. It's a thing by Google, with money from Google - they should be able to decide who they want in. People are complaining like Google has responsibility towards the whole open source community or something ;)

DU

Deleted account Sat 7 Mar 2015 8:56PM

Well, in some way, they are. Google has built a great part of its empire on FOSS technologies.

AA

Akash Agrawall Sun 8 Mar 2015 7:51AM

Did anyone go to the session in #gsoc in which they were supposed to give feedback?

DU

Dumitru Ursu Mon 16 Mar 2015 2:21PM

unfortunately I didn't have time for it. They said that questions could also be asked here: ospoteam at gmail.com

AA

Akash Agrawall Mon 16 Mar 2015 2:26PM

@dumitruursu Okay. IMHO, I think we should go ahead and ask them. If diaspora will participate next year then we can get a heads-up about what was missing this year.
Thanks. :)

DU

Dumitru Ursu Mon 16 Mar 2015 2:29PM

ok, I'll send a mail now.

DU

Dumitru Ursu Mon 16 Mar 2015 10:36PM

The main problem was the idea page, it wasn't not good enough - we need longer, more complete descriptions.
Here is what Carol told us to follow:
http://en.flossmanuals.net/GSoCMentoring/making-your-ideas-page/

Carol is a Google representative. I will publish the email if I get her permision.

As said, lack of time to prepare - we started too late to prepare and basically not enough here were interested to help prepare.
