GSoC 2015

@augier - during this period, we don't have holidays in india either. but a lot of students do participate in gsoc and they performs well. so I don't think that the lack of holidays will be a problem.

@jasonrobinson @ @praveenarimbrathod today(20-02-2015 19:00 UTC (11am PST)) is the last date to submit the application. I think we should hurry if we haven't submitted the application yet.

Sorry everyone about not moving with the application. Been sick for last 3 days. I will draft it tomorrow as early as possible. Then gather some issues too and post here. But I will have to send the application asap without waiting too much for discussion regarding the list of issues - deadline.

If anyone wants to help list issue links here WITH a little description (one-two lines on what the aim is) too, that would be awesome, thanks. I think we should avoid huge things like API, etc... Those things cannot be done by some people coming outside from the project for a few months. The issues need to be easy take take on.

@hrishikeshakastult Many universities have holidays in india during summer.

@akashagrawall - I don't think that you'll get the whole three months. I was an org admin and mentor for the past two years. every student were balancing gsoc and classes (even exams were there for a few of them) and they did it pretty well.

the point is, you CAN do gsoc even if you have classes in summer :)

It could use some love. I just chose, in panic, some of the most requested sane features. Feel free to remove / edit / improve. But PLEASE, keep the same kind of formatting and put a description for the issue. Also I still don't think putting things which require extreme knowledge in the diaspora* code into this list. Like API, etc.

@augier if you just want to get paid then you can code for any project ;) You already contribute to diaspora* and as such what would be the benefit to the project in having you as our student? ;)

It's not only being paid. It will be no different than when I usually contribute except I might take 2 or 3 weeks of holiday to work on this and I will be paid to do what I love ;)

But if it causes trouble, I won't do it, it is no problem to me ;)

I'll have a look at the wiki page and try to complete it.

@flaburgan what about mentoring? Find 2-3 tasks you'd be fine with mentoring and add yourself as a possible mentor? :)

I just received an email - it seems that we haven't been accepted :( We should ask this Friday why is that so (on #gsoc), and how can we improve our application for the next year.

It's a shame but I'm kinda not too surprised. Our application was done in a rush, had only two people linked to it (= not enough mentors) and our issue list wasn't very well constructed (= made in a rush).

Next year lets do a proper job. Calendar event set for next Autumn to start calling out to mentors :)

Even google-melange didn't apply this time since the number of organizations to be selected were very less.

This is going OT, but I don't really see the fuss. It's a thing by Google, with money from Google - they should be able to decide who they want in. People are complaining like Google has responsibility towards the whole open source community or something ;)

Well, in some way, they are. Google has built a great part of its empire on FOSS technologies.

Did anyone go to the session in #gsoc in which they were supposed to give feedback?

@dumitruursu Okay. IMHO, I think we should go ahead and ask them. If diaspora will participate next year then we can get a heads-up about what was missing this year.

The main problem was the idea page, it wasn't not good enough - we need longer, more complete descriptions.

As said, lack of time to prepare - we started too late to prepare and basically not enough here were interested to help prepare.
