What hosting services do we buy?

What servers do we maintain?

What software runs on those servers?

Right now CiviCRM is hosted by these guys:

https://civihosting.com/

This is very silly, because they're expensive and we hardly ever use their support service. I want to move it to another server, and cancel this one, but first I want to know which servers will exist and who the admins will be.

I think that Martin F is using v-servers: https://www.server4you.net/virtual-server
I am using dedicated servers at a sister company: https://www.serverloft.eu/

I have a standing offer for excellent prices on their older server models (no longer offered on their products page) and will make a proposal (or 2).

The question of dedicated vs virtual is an important one, lets consider it. A relevant recent post from gitlab:

I think the points to consider for dedicated vs virtual are mainly if we need a constantly reserved amount of resources, right? (not shared resources, like a vserver)
Most of the points of gitlab are about moving to "bare metal" - i.e. build their own server farm. With a dedicated server we still have maintenance/hardware stuff handled by other dudes.
+ performance differences between dedicated / vServer
+ docker capability

Dedicated Server 16GB ram for €59 Closed Sun 30 Apr 2017 4:02PM

The hosting company that i use serverloft.eu offers the following server (it is an older model no longer on their products page, but i think it would be great for our purposes):

PerfectServer L - Xeon 4.0
HP DL320e Gen8
Intel Xeon E3-1230v2 [1x Quad-Core]
16 GB DDR3 RAM ECC
2x 2,000 GB SATA II HDDs 7.200 rpm
OR 2x 128 GB SSD, 100,000 IOPS – Samsung
RAID 1 - Software
1 Gbit/s uplink
Price: € 59

I propose to set up one of these servers for
tamera.org : website and email
civiCRM

The greengeeks server is paid through another year, and can be used for:
verlag-meiga
and other smaller sites that we need to maintain

the gitlab/dev/stage .tamera.org sites, i can continue to host on my server.

I wouldn't move CiviCRM to another server without clear decisions on who pays for it, who's responsible for it, and who has access to it.
