What to think of a student on the board?

S Sicco Public Seen by 61

The University has promised to add a student to the board. This does not match our demands as it is only a partial step to a democratic board. So what should we think of this offer and how should we respond?

This is just a tiny step. One student in the board, who is consequently ignored by other members of the board, who will probably have other goals and other priorities. It will not lead to much results in practice, if any.

I think the goal should be, that we as academia, should earn the right to govern ourselves, making decisions together, instead of others making decisions over us.

If we succeed in that, we do not only achieve something for ourselves. We will also inspire others to empower themselves. You can already see now that we inspire cleaners in Oss, workers in Schiphol and students in Groningen. Just by only achieving some minor concessions like a student in the board. Just think of what kind of domino effect we could establish in society as a whole, if we continue our struggle; not until we achieve enough to not be dissatisfied too much anymore, but only until we achieve real democracy. Real democracy, in which we govern ourselves, instead of some governing over others.

At this moment, we have momentum. This does not only give us opportunity. It also gives us responsibility to use it. So, please, do not only think of yourselves in terms of being able to comfortably finish your study or being able to keep your job with a certain amount of professional freedom. Please, use the momentum we currently have to inspire others. To make a difference. To change society. Because that is what we can do right now, if we do not accept half-hearted compromises and not give up until we achieve real change.

Interessant voorstel. Onze reactie moet afhangen van twee dingen:
- Hoe wordt bepaald welke student toetreedt?
- Wat zijn de bevoegdheden van deze student?

Het voorstel zoals dat er nu is, is dus volledig nietszeggend...

if the student would have the power to call for a binding referendum on any decision he chooses i think it would be a valuable addition...

I think we should work towards a system in which we discuss issues and (if necessary) vote on them ourselves. And only accept representation voluntarily, per issue and per moment; not by standerd.

If and only if they amend their offer so that the student will be ELECTED, not appointed, and will actually be able to INFLUENCE board decisions (so no 'advisory') role, I will be inclined to accept it.

I agree that an appointed student cannot critically control the board. However I wouldn't mind a democratically chosen student.
