Community Physical Resources
This is the feedback from Sept/October 2015 submissions-
Consolidation of facilities
There are too many single purpose facilities that are scattered around –
many of which are not fully utilised, run down and expensive to
maintain. There needs to be more collaboration and linking of facilities –
this will encourage connection between generations. Suggested
collaboration of facilities were;
•
Brooklyn Hub
36 submissions mentioned a multi-complex/community hub in
Brooklyn. Suggests were that it; replace the existing community
centre site, be similar to the Karori complex to incorporate the
library, resource centre, meeting rooms, have a café
and a large hall
for indoor sports and use by the school.
•
Vogelmorn Corner
21 submissions mentioned connecting the resources in Vogeltown
(Bowling Club, Green, Hall) to create a central 'commons' area -
Suggestion to open the
Vogelmorn Hall out onto the green (this would also provide better
fire egress for the building). Also suggestion of developing a
community club that would include arts and tech precinct,
community kitchen and a place for small business to operate.
Sports facility
•
Indoor hall/gum
There is no indoor facility big enough for sports (this is
particularly an issue in winter). Suggested this facility could also
be used as a hall by the school.
•
Outdoor all-weather turf
Need an all-weather turf particularly for winter. Suggested
locations; Vogelmorn Park, Tanera Park. Could possibly just be an all-weather running track around the outside of Vogelmorn Park.
Lack of facilities
Recognised lack of facilities in the Kingston/Mornington area –
no focal
point where that community can come together.
No arts hub where people can come together and be creative.
Need a facility that caters for older children (9-13). This would provide a space to ‘hang out,’ identify their place as a valued part of the community, develop confidence, and learn social skills to equip them for the years ahead
Library
Library needs to be bigger (possible merge with community centre) and
better location so it is more prominent in the community (one suggested
the current fire-station site). Also requests for longer operation hours.
Swimming pool
35 submissions wanted a local swimming pool. Submissions suggested
it must have an indoor/outdoor capability and needs to be big enough
for swimming lessons.
Playground
Need to invest in upgrading playgrounds; Ridgway, Community Centre,
Vogeltown and Kingston.
Public Toilets
17 submissions commented on the lack of public toilets or requested
that new toilets be put in (Wind Turbine, Kingston, Community Centre)
more sheltered seating required around the suburb to encourage walking and places for elderly to sit and chat
more rubbish bins
