We've had a couple of people offer to do the Chinese translation recently. This thread is for them to connect and collaborate :)

the current system does detect incoming preferred locales, but doesn't take into account dialects (e.g. zh-tw and zh-hk would both be simplified to zh).

we have code underway to address this. so far there has not been a problem but there have not been conflictig/ competing locales

Apologies for the inaccurate language selector, I was aware that it would need changing, but wanted to prioritise activating the language as an option so that you and your community could use the tool. :)

Hi @clkao can I ask a question? zh-Hant is 正體中文, but that's different again from Taiwanese, right? Should we refer to it as Taiwan Chinese or what is the right term to use in English?

I'm deploying this change now, please let me know if it needs any further change

cool that you used loomio to decide this and clarified what can be a bit confusing for us non-Chinese speakers :)

Hi @tomjpsun, @hsinlincheng, @anthonyliu, @clkao. Sorry for being off-topic. I understand the situation may be quite fluid over there. We're interested in scaling the app to prepare for g0v.

Could one of you email me and Ben: [email protected], [email protected] with a timeframe on when this might happen? Thanks.

Also, is there a instant messaging service you use that we can hook into to keep in touch more fluidly?

@benjaminknightloom, @mixirving

we don't have an irc channel. we use hipchat an loomio internally. We're happy to chat (text or voice/video) on other services as well though

Just to explain the Chinese language situation: there is an overlapping difference between spoken and written language. PRC and ROC both use mandarin, but PRC writes it with zh-Hans and ROC writes it with zh-Hant. Hong-Kong speaks mostly cantonese, but uses mandarin as their writing language (usually pronounced with the cantonese value of the characters) written with zh-Hant. Singapore is just like ROC mostly mandarin, but also written in zh-Hant. Otoh, there are a lot of other dialects in PRC that use zh-Hans as their written form.

I think you can use zh internally as the identifier until someone makes a Simplified translation ;).
