Diaspora Yatra
We are planning to go on a tour across schools and colleges in India to promote Diaspora. If you want to help out in any way (especially creating write ups and designs), let us know.

But see what it says in the second section:
'Yatra' can also describe a procession, or any festival which figures a procession, such as Rath Yatra, where chariots are pulled in parade down the streets of Puri in Orissa. In modern times the word can be used to denote marches or demonstrations, for political, environmental or societal causes.
As this is a thing taking place in India, let's leave it up to how Indians use the word, not what Wikipedia says...
Besides, 'outreach' has religious connotations (it's a term used for evangelism), if you want to get into it...
Pirate Praveen Fri 6 Dec 2013 5:53PM
Yatra means travel in many Indian languages.
goob Fri 6 Dec 2013 6:59PM
Coincidentally (or possibly not), a post has just appeared in my stream about someone's fantastic three-week rafting yatra down an Indian river.
Dennis Schubert Tue 10 Dec 2013 9:13AM
@praveenarimbrathod As the vote seems to pass... does your server support IPv6? We might want to get some troubles with our *.diasporafoundation.org AAAA records otherwise, so we would have to change the record if you don't support IPv6...
Pirate Praveen Thu 12 Dec 2013 7:04AM
@dennisschubert we have an ipv6 address 2a03:f86:2:2::2 but we have not configured it yet. You can use it and it will start working once we configure it.
Dennis Schubert Thu 12 Dec 2013 9:41AM
yatra.diasporafoundation.org. IN A 194.103.16.69
yatra.diasporafoundation.org. IN AAAA 2a03:f86:2:2::2
There we are.

Nice work!
Pirate Praveen Fri 13 Dec 2013 6:43AM
@dennisschubert thank you :)
Pirate Praveen Fri 27 Dec 2013 6:04PM
@dennisschubert can you add an SPF record as well? Passwords sent out by wordpress is going to spam.
Dennis Schubert Sat 28 Dec 2013 5:43PM
@praveenarimbrathod sorry, sure. done.
Pirate Praveen Sun 29 Dec 2013 9:07AM
@dennisschubert thanks!
Pirate Praveen Mon 15 Dec 2014 4:39PM
I have now scheduled a month long tour across my home state of Kerala. Looking forward to all your support.
@dennisschubert , can you help with the ssl certificate email verification? startssl.com will send you a verification code (as the domain is registered under your name), let me know a time we can sit on irc and do it.
Dennis Schubert Mon 15 Dec 2014 4:45PM
The domain is not registred to my name, @deadsuperhero owns it. However, it's my mail server and root@, webmaster@, postmaster@ will all come to my inbox.
Just go ahead and request the certificate and send me your email address. I will forward the emails as soon as they arrive. :)

It might be the time to study the idea of officially offer turnkey solution for non-profit organization like schools ?
Balasankar C Sat 20 Dec 2014 8:43AM
Hi,
As per @praveenarimbrathod 's Debian Diaspora Campaign, we are planning a one-month-long programme to travel across the state of Kerala, India visiting schools and colleges and promoting the concepts of Diaspora, Privacy, Anti-Surveillence etc. For this, it would be extremely helpful if we have some platform for people to search for events based on date and place and also RSVP for the same. Earlier we used meetups but the service from those guys was extremely poor (The page just vanished one day, and we lost all our archives about the previous events). This time we are planning on using the Events Wordpress plugin. At this point, that seems to be the only viable option.
It would be great if we have a subdomain like events.diasporafoundation.org points to a server with Wordpress installed (which we can provide) in it so that we can use it for all the events (not just yatra) related to Diaspora.
Manu Krishnan T V Sat 20 Dec 2014 8:47AM
@dennisschubert Due to resource issues in poddery server, we moved all other sites to other servers.
We now plan to have a wordpress instance for Diaspora Yatra as an immediate solution for handling events and RSVP for the diaspora yatra planned.
So, can you point yatra.diasporafoundation.org to 162.220.11.15
@deadsuperhero @balasankarchelamat @praveenarimbrathod
Manu Krishnan T V Sat 20 Dec 2014 9:23AM
@dennisschubert If we can implement what @balasankarchelamat suggested, it will be good enough, so that the yatra.diasporafoundation.org site can stay as a static HTML page.

meetup.com/diaspora is gone (no idea who was paying for it, all the archives are lost too). We should have a similar mechanism for organzing meetups and wordpress events plugin seems the best option.

The implementation of the #events feature and integration in the development of diaspora* is the priority. There aren't too many official events and linking the #events with diasporafoundation does not denote any "direct democracy" that people desire

A central archive of events will be helpful.

We should encourage schools to use Diaspora, as the school could come together to create a pod of their own! It would benefit the students because they could enhance their knowledge in computers. (and even learn about Linux!) I agree to this!

As this is needed ASAP, I say we go for it. We can merge it any better alternatives we may have in future.
Pablo Cúbico Sun 21 Dec 2014 9:34PM
Hey @praveenarimbrathod , let me know if you need help on those designs.
Manu Krishnan T V Mon 22 Dec 2014 12:25PM
@camil I agree that events functionality for Diaspora is a much needed feature. What do you suggest for events happening till its implemented?
Earlier, there was a meetup page, but it is gone now. We are looking for an alternative to that. A central events location will be helpful to get inputs on ideas from a larger group of people.
Pirate Praveen Mon 22 Dec 2014 12:26PM
@camil , building events feature in diaspora is going to take time. People choose to work on what is priority for them and this negative vote is not going to make someone work on events in diaspora on priority. If a common events platform is not desired by the project I could always build it under a different name.
Dennis Schubert Mon 22 Dec 2014 3:05PM
@manukrishnantv I've changed the IPv4 address as requested. However, there is an AAAA record pointing to 2a03:f86:2:2::2. What's the new v6 address?
Camil Mon 22 Dec 2014 9:13PM
@manukrishnantv @praveenarimbrathod The implementation of #events is being discussed for more than a year, yet nobody seems to care about speeding up the process! Now what, spend resources and time on something else than what really counts for diasporians?! Almost everyone on diaspora would donate for the integration of #events, and I wasn't the only one telling you repeatedly that people WILL contribute to support programmers working on this vital feature. I don't like the way you postpone this, honestly. I told Praveen I will help him with the Yatra website , but the creation of a similar events web platform seems to me a huge waste of time, as there aren't plenty of official events at the moment and we need to build a stronger social network out of diaspora* before promoting it as a viable alternative to facebook. You should also consider building on the #events feature because many more people would find out about what's happening ou there than if you choose to make a webpage for it. That's my humble opinion at least.
Pirate Praveen Tue 23 Dec 2014 1:47PM
@camil the thing is, neither me nor @manukrishnantv are ruby programmers and we will never be coding events feature in diaspora. There is one student who is interested to work on events, but he is very new to ruby and he is still learning basics, it will take time until he can start coding on it. Also diaspora yatra is at least 30 events in a month and I need a platform to coordinate it. If not events.diasporafoundation.org, it will be something else. I thought it better to share the work I have already decided to do.
Pirate Praveen Fri 26 Dec 2014 9:24AM
@hola , any help in design would be awesome. code for the site is at https://gitlab.com/piratemovin/diasporayatra

Hey @praveenarimbrathod I'll take a look at it!
Pirate Praveen Fri 2 Jan 2015 7:20AM
@dennisschubert can you create events.diasporafoundation.org and point it to same server as yatra.diasporafoundation.org?
Flaburgan Tue 6 Jan 2015 9:13AM
@praveenarimbrathod I just checked yatra.dfoun, can you indicate more specifically that this is a campain in India, and that the bitcoin account is not owned by the foundation but by one of you?
Currently it is not clear at all on the website who you are and what's your relation with the official foundation.
Akshay Tue 6 Jan 2015 10:19AM
Hi, I've added a subtitle at http://yatra.diasporafoundation.org/#fundraising
and a couple of sentences at http://yatra.diasporafoundation.org/#about suggesting that we are different from Diaspora Foundation. I hope they are obvious enough.
Camil Tue 6 Jan 2015 11:51AM
@praveenarimbrathod @akshay @balasankarchelamat Congrats for making the website look astonishing! Whether you realise it or not, this is the BEST good-looking diaspora* promotion platform so far. I'm really happy that you guys were able to do it with few resources! I could see that you have an events section on the webpage, which is very practical and people will find it easy to see what's popping around (hopefully the #events feature will be available soon on diaspora* as well, I got crazy by seeing so many requests on that!).
My personal suggestions about making the website look even more awesome:
India is one of the most beautiful countries. Why not take some pictures and upload them on a dedicated section of the page, linked with the Indian diaspora* community? That could make a huge impact in many ways!
Create English blog entries with updates, wanted features, friendly / popular pictures of the diaspora* community and feed them into the [planet][https://planet.diasporafoundation.org/], the planet is barely known and we need to encourage people to write! Let's get out from our bubble and share!
Place a widget to show that you're alive (not that you're not alive, but just to make people more interested in what you're doing) :-) - like: traffic, maps, "what we're doing right now", "where you are and where we are" - these are pure examples of how you could make things cooler.
Hope it helps, good luck with everything!
Balasankar C Tue 6 Jan 2015 12:40PM
@camil Thanks for the suggestions.. We will try to include them also. :)
Flaburgan Tue 6 Jan 2015 12:57PM
@akshay that's already better :) Maybe also add "in India" to the title "Diaspora Yatra is a campaign to promote diaspora and privacy in digital communications in India."
Pirate Praveen Thu 8 Jan 2015 7:44PM
I just had a chat with @dennisschubert and here is the update. We'll use events.pirates.org.in for Diaspora Yatra. He will setup an events management service soon on servers managed by the core team.
Akshay Wed 4 Feb 2015 4:04PM
Hey @goob @jasonrobinson @camil etc. I've written something about week 1 of diaspora yatra with the intention of making it a post on diaspora blog (or planet). Here is it:
Diaspora Yatra - Week 1 Review
Diaspora Yatra, a campaign in India to promote diaspora* and to attain self reliance in communication technology, completes its first week today.
‘Yatra’ is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘journey’. Diaspora Yatra, launched by the Indian Pirates with eight partner organizations, has already covered four districts in the Southern Indian state of Kerala. Pirate Praveen, who recently created a one step installer for diaspora on debian, is a key player in this campaign engaging in constructive discussions about diaspora with people from all wakes of life.
Diaspora Yatra is turning into a live experiment on what the concepts of freedom, decentralization, and privacy means to different sections of the society.
While the techie adults in Technopark, Trivandrum where the campaign was flagged off were opiniate about security issues in decentralized networks and its trade off with privacy, the young students of Anchal West School, Kollam were more worried about keeping unwanted eyes away from their private affairs.
After being forced to think of how “free” services provided by other social networks are economically feasible for their providers, the teachers at Badhiriya Bachelor of Education Training Centre, Kannanallore were confused whom to trust. But the kids of Mar Baselias school, Kaithakode were receptive and eager.
The working class who were assembled at Government SNDP Higher Secondary School, were quicker to explore diaspora, encryption, and related applications. So were the students of Mar Thoma college, Thiruvalla, Pathanamthitta who also were interested in the legal issues involved in using diaspora. The lawyers of bar association, Alappuzha went a step ahead and talked about whether podmins should scrutinize the content published on their pods and about the jurisdiction of pods.
It must be more than a coincidence that every kind of person has a say about how diaspora* should be, moments after they come to know about it for the first time. Maybe there is an unsatiated craving for freedom and individuality in these minds. And that is exactly the hunger that the Diaspora Yatra team intends to sate.
Can you tell me how to proceed?
Jason Robinson Wed 4 Feb 2015 6:53PM
I like the post and if no one objects, can add it to the blog for review?
Akshay Thu 5 Feb 2015 12:46PM
I guess nobody is objecting :P
goob Thu 5 Feb 2015 2:01PM
Wasn't events.diasporafoundation.org created for this purpose (see vote upthread)? And there's already yatra.diasporafoundation.org.
I think it might be better to put one post on the main blog about the yatra in general, and pointing to these weekly updates on yatra.diasporafoundation.org (or wherever), rather than putting the weekly updates on the main blog.
Pirate Praveen Thu 5 Feb 2015 5:20PM
@goob events.df.o is for planning events, collecting RSVPs. This post can mention #diasporayatra tag for further updates. I think this post has a good general overview and go to main blog. No need to post every week's updates there. May be one more can go to main blog once campaign is over.
Pirate Praveen Thu 5 Feb 2015 5:22PM
And core team wants to manage events.df.o directly as it involves personal data. They promised to set it up for the community soon.
goob Thu 5 Feb 2015 6:53PM
Thanks, both. It certainly is good to publicise the yatra from the blog. I've edited it a bit so it works as a one-off post with a short paragraph at the end encouraging people to check the yatra sub-site or follow the tag. You can see a preview at https://blog.diasporafoundation.org/10 - let me know what you think. Please check the links to make sure I have used the right ones - in-diaspora links are to poddery, as that's the pod on which the organisers are mostly to be found. Also, Praveen, are you happy with a link to your profile on this blog post?
Is there a fixed end date to the yatra? If so it would be good to mention that, along with the start date.
Once everyone's happy, I (or Jason) can publish the blog post.
Pirate Praveen Thu 5 Feb 2015 11:19PM
@goob looks good to me. May be profile link can be changed to poddery.com/u/praveen. Currently we are scheduled to end the campaign by March 6. But it may be extended by a few days if we are able to organize more events than our initial plan.
Pirate Praveen Fri 6 Feb 2015 10:28AM
@goob it would be nice to add some photos from the campaign
goob Fri 6 Feb 2015 5:54PM
@praveenarimbrathod do you have links to any photos you'd like to be included?
I'd prefer to use profile links in the form podname.tld/people/guid, as they are more 'robust' - someone could append the url suffix to their pod domain to view it in their own pod.
Pirate Praveen Fri 6 Feb 2015 8:50PM
@goob pick some good photos from #diasporayatra
Pirate Praveen Fri 6 Feb 2015 8:53PM
@goob searching by diaspora id easier for people than changing URLs. /u/username is easier to remember.
goob Sat 7 Feb 2015 12:17PM
@goob pick some good photos from #diasporayatra
If you chaps want this on the blog, it would be appropriate for you to search for and suggest photos. I don't have time to go trawling.
searching by diaspora id easier for people than changing URLs.
In that case we should drop the links entirely. I still believe that /people/guid is better than /u/username. We're not expecting people to remember the URI - it's something to help them quickly get to the profile in their browser. If for some reason your name is not appearing in search results in someone's pod, they will have no way of finding you if all they have is /u/praveen. With /people/guid at least they have a chance.

Nice one, thanks. Do we have permission to use both of them? I notice the first one was posted by Rejah Rehim. I did have a little look myself and found this nice one of a speaker surrounded by kids, which Praveen posted, so we know we can use it: https://poddery.com/uploads/images/scaled_full_f333223ecad58dddf292.jpg

It's an airline (yatra.com) and also there is a lot on wikipedia:
Doesn't sound too dirty that we can't use it :) Though I dislike the religious feel to it, which is why I abstained, but the purpose is good (= getting more people to diaspora). Hope the campaign is a success! :)
