Should we use sub-groups?

Sub-groups seem like a great way to organize topics, but it looks like presently you can't freely join sub-groups without being invited by at least a member of that group. Feels a bit silly to me, I'm considering not using them anymore, despite having created two initial discussions with sub-groups.
