Stop shilly-shallying and call a vote... Closed Sat 4 Jul 2015 5:07AM
People have been calling for democratic reform for decades.
After the last election the Liberal Democrat Party sold its soul for a referendum, yet allowed the government to get away with offering only an alternative that they knew that nobody wanted.
Left to the government, that is most likely the best we will get: they have offered us change and we said "no".
The last government is by a wide margin the worst that I can remember, seeming to be universally despised by anyone capable of rational, evidence based discussion, yet our electoral system has just voted them back in.
We need to change it and we need to change it now before the riots start.
We do have the power, set out in statute to call a referendum. That power may only extend over our own parish, but if we could arrange a national campaign of parish referenda, then that would equate to a national referendum.
The statute does not grant any actual power to such a referendum, but that power is enshrined in our right to democratic elections as set out in international conventions.
