University Campus Co-operatives
Hello all,
Does anyone have any research, information, or materials about university co-ops in any country? In particular, examples (inlcuding support received in terms of facilities, finance, etc) and laws (Conditions, regulations, and laws for establishment of University Cooperatives and their support)? Or even just marketing materials?
Thank you,
Ilana

You might want to look at COOPSCO, which is a provincial wide association of campus based cooperatives in Quebec. Daniel Cote ([email protected]), a retired professor, is the Chair of Coop HEC, which is the Business School at the University of Montreal. They run all campus business operations including 2 cafeterias, a restaurant, bookstore, merchandising store and parking facilities.
You might also get in contact with NASCO (North American Students for Copoeration), which is a network of student cooperatives in the US (they have a couple of Canadian members). They are largely housing coops (less entrepreneurial).
In Japan, you will also find cooperatives on universities (especially in food) which go back to the 19th century. Here is a link with a timeline - http://www.univcoop.or.jp/en/about/history.html

The Times Higher article is interesting - I hadn't realised, for example, that each faculty is effectively a primary co-operative and the university is organised as a secondary co-op. The other interesting point was that the subjects offered are affected by the need to operate commercially - the arts are now well covered, but business and science is strong.
