Religious background is also a factor. Most Muslim-majority countries aside from Turkey and Indonesia will not accept Jews from the UK, US and elsewhere if they can 'establish' that. TESOL Arabia in effect cooperates with this practice. Bridges should the built between Arab and Jewish professionals in the field.

When I say countries, I mean of course the educational institutions in those countries. Universities and state schools in Malaysia also tend to follow this practice, with some exceptions, such as at their leading university, U of Malaya.

Regarding ageism, here an article of mine some years ago: https://ojs.lib.byu.edu/spc/index.php/TESL/article/view/3757 In Thailand, it is very hard for any state university or school to hire a teacher 65 or older. I was repeatedly told that applying for a no. of positions. But RMUT, the largest technical university in Thailand (some 35 campuses), figured out how to hire me despite the national age bar. They found a clever loophole.

One major Thai university in the far south advised me they would not consider any candidates age 40 and over. In China (PRC), there are some teachers over the age of 75 working in TEFL. In Laos and Malaysia, where I taught, age was no bar. I have urged the Thai authorities to drop the age bar for ex-pat teachers and seek to recruit retirees, as China is actively doing.

Bulgaria where I am settled also has an age bar of 65, they cannot offer a regular teaching contract in the public sector to anyone that age or over. Adjunct contracts are around $2.20 an hour, with no other benefits.

What about combining this with Aim 1, which is to fight these types of discrimination? something like, "We aim to raise awareness of and fight discrimination in ELT on the basis of gender, native language, ethnicity, religion, age, and disability"

ALTERNATIVE: We aim to raise awareness of and fight discrimination in ELT on the basis of gender, race, disability, native language, sexual orientation, nationality, ethnicity, religion, age or political orientation.

Politics definitely a form of discrimination in a number of places, as we all know sexual orientation ditto evident 'difference'

Again, discrimination does not need to be defined as in doing so, we may be excluding some people we haven't mentioned.
