I've heard from three people this week that want to translate Loomio into Japanese. Y'all can use this thread to coordinate who's doing what :)

Hi. I am happy to help where I can, but the first question I have is, is there a demand for Japanese users? If we do a translation will it even be used? If not, I wonder if it's the right time.

There's not a huge demand, no, totally no pressure or deadline. However I am predicting that Japanese is going to present some interesting challenges, which will lead to changes which affect all the other languages so I'm thinking it would be nice to start sooner rather than later.

What challenges do you foresee? Encoding?

@alannakrause translating from SVO to SOV ordering will raise a few issues.

A native speaker in Wellington (Ayumi) is interested in helping do translation for Japanese. I have some questions...

  • Are we set up for the word order issues Japanese will present? Or is there more work to do before we can start?

  • Who else is keen to help?

  • Ayumi would like to know what sort of time commitment it would be. I'll let her know that it can take as long as it takes, but I'm interested in how many total hours other translations have taken.

  • What sort of priority should we place on this? I could invest some of my time as well but I'm not sure if now is the right time for me to do that.

@alanna for the greek language it took me about 6 hours when i translated in October if i remember well, and all the updates are about 1 to 2 hours more.

@alanna We have gradually been shifting to longer strings, which will be easier to translate, but it's hard for me to guess the difficulty of a Japanese translation right now. I'd recommend she get into Transifex and poke around for half an hour to get a feel for the job.

It may be that there is a lot of development work necessary before supporting SOV-ordering is viable. All the languages we've delivered so far have taken very little energy from us, so I wouldn't want to invest much time unless we decide it is a priority.

Realistically, we've just been responding where the enthusiasm is, so if Ayumi is keen, we'll do what we can to support her :)

@alanna if you'd like to check, we can sit down and translate some core lines, then I'll load them up in the app to look at this is probably the easiest way to see what we'll be dealing with
