At least some of us should plan on going to this, to get a sense of the structure and the people. I'm in.

Should we do the Science Cafe on October 21? Closed Thu 1 Oct 2015 9:07PM
There was an unexpected cancellation that we may be able to fill.
See the note from the Science Cafe coordinator, and our message to her:
Hi John and SftP team,
John, may I call you about this? There might be an opportunity this semester, on October 21. (I just had a cancellation that has put me in a very difficult spot).
So that would be very short notice, but as this is a very informal event, it might just work. Let me know what you think.

HI Amy:
I am involved with a group of grad students and faculty, mainly in biology and snare, who have reconstituted an old group called Science for the People. It is a group that had a relatively long term existence in the70s and 80s, and now there is a move to reinstitute it as a national or international organization. It is basically a group that analyzes the underlying political ideology involved in science generally. There was a retrospective at the University of Mass a couple of years ago (http://science-for-the-people.org/program/). I was the keynote speaker (http://science-for-the-people.org/keynote-lecture-john-vandermeer-with-video/). We have a group here that is part of a larger attempt to reinvigorate discussion of the political content of science.
One of the projects that the local group has developed an interest in is possibly sponsoring one of the science cafes. the idea would be to lead a discussion on the history of political analysis of science, focusing on the issues that have been important to SftP in the past (e.g., agriculture, militarism, the social content of science, teaching science) all of which have a common theme of analyzing the political content of science. Might it be possible for our group to take on one of the science cafes next semester?
cheers,
John
