Do we pay our politicians too much?
Should we link the income we pay our politicians to something like the average wage/minimum wage of NZer's? This would give clear incentive to increase the economic wellbeing of people in NZ.

Should we link politicians pay to average income of NZer's? Closed Thu 12 Jun 2014 9:10AM
This could we a good incentive to increase the economic wellbeing of NZer's. An example would be a sitting MP in 2015 gets paid (x) times the average wage of a NZer in 2014? Ideas, thoughts?

I agree on the basis that MP's should be paid 1 x the average income.

If you want below-average politicians or just the super rich to stand for parliament this is a wonderful idea.

Politicians should be remunerated based on how well they are doing to benefit the majority of new Zealanders, this could be one way to do that IMO.

We want in people in parliament that are dedicated to the prosperity and equality of everyone as a whole. They should realise the personal implications of this on their income for the sake of living up to their duties without being hypocritic.

I think the policy technician wage (or politician if you don't believe in the merits of subject matter experts) should be paid equivalent to what they could get with their skills in the private sector, but capped at something reasonable above/below.
