Visual Branding Core using Purple Spitting Phoenix
There is visual chaos.
Occupy is best when it uses asset based management & emergent design principles... Basically taking what you have and improvising a fun solution.
So let's occupy this.
looks like best plan of action is to spin designs off of the purple & orange one crafted by Ryan Griffin?
Idea would be to 'riff' off of his design with use of similar colors, font & design elements when possible.
Would not be a hard rule but would give a frame work for many designs to be produced that would all work together.
Simply using the same font would help alot.
Colors are: #5F098E #ED604E #EDB82C #E31904 #8223B5
Think this might work?

+1 bird theme.

Folks. Please Just use #NatGat we don't need to include the year & it will allow the content to come up with past year's event.
Hashtags should be short & consistent. Let's use what the community already use, which is #NatGat.
This will connect our work with past content online & will help future efforts.
It's always good to do a twitter search 1st before spending time trying to workshop a new unique one.
Alot of #OWS content is lost to our wider movement because of the use of unique hashtags... Occupy speaks Twitter look to that platform for ideas on best practices & interesting tactics..
Tricia Thu 24 Apr 2014 10:56AM
I've been tweeting NatGat2014 so ppl can get this year's info The first year we did #NatGat the second wan -#NatGat2 in Kzoo. We had agreed on #NatGat2014 - I could settle for #NAtGat3 if it must be made shorter
Sally G Thu 24 Apr 2014 12:06PM
I also have been using the year; let’s not revisit another decision that has already been made.
Tricia Thu 24 Apr 2014 12:31PM
The image just needs to be updated and this one needs to be retired - not be put into circulation
Justin Thu 24 Apr 2014 5:18PM
You folks do know hash tags are for Twitter, right?
No one will see #NatGat2014, it's a wasteful confused design.
If yer gonna break with Occupy practice and make a custom one consider using #NatGat14. People HATE extra character ;)
Every one counts. Not a big deal folks will use what they prefer & the best catch on- regulating hash tags or anything on twitter never works..
#myNYPD :)
Tricia Thu 24 Apr 2014 9:04PM
True!
Jackie Thu 24 Apr 2014 10:46PM
@justin2 is there an Occupy Twitter tutorial?
I know Kit O'Connell of Austin did one a few years ago, I can't locate atm.
Justin Fri 25 Apr 2014 12:50AM
I'll reach out to kit to see. I'll see what info i can pull together about tactics and practices Occupy has had success with.
Julia Clark Fri 25 Apr 2014 12:53AM
@jackie http://mediacause.org/essential-twitter-for-nonprofits-guide/
That has the basics and advanced info. They accepted me last year. I was very flattered, but have hardly incorporated them into anything..
I think now might be a good time to reach out to them
Justin Fri 25 Apr 2014 1:07AM
Great sheet of Twitter 101 info & congratulations on being accepted to their program.
Sally G Fri 25 Apr 2014 2:21AM
O.K., so Next Year is #NatGat15; This Year is already decided and in use as #NatGat2014; we discovered the problem with #NG3 when we got postal code Tweets. If we had not already been using #NatGat2014—an analogue to last year’s #NatGat2013, BTW (Occupy precedent), I would agree with #NatGat14, but stick with what we have rather than fragment and learn what we can for new things—such as Caravan hashtags that are not already in place.
Justin Fri 25 Apr 2014 2:40AM
We are creating the fragmentation by using one not informed by past practice.
Use which ever moves you the Retweets will be the best way to see which work for wider OWS.
We're being a bit TOP DOWN in our thinking in this.
These are Twitter Hashtags. Research the history of past practices yourself.. I think once you Occupy the question you'll see what Im talking about ;)
Loving the dialog & the fact we're keeping it light ;)
Tricia Fri 25 Apr 2014 11:49AM
Thanks Justin. Whatever you are doing on twitter is working. We had 32 interactions last night while I was sleeping.
Hashtags are for FB and the Internet searches, too
Justin Mon 28 Apr 2014 11:42PM
Hashtags are for many platforms but one should research them via twitter to see what's been used historically.
Little warning- Using hashtags allows people to find your content when you search THAT tag but FB does NOT promote them in newsfeeds beyond the basic 10% of fans they show content to in the first 3 hours.
Using hashtags on FB basically buries the post. So I do not recommend using them unless the tag is being used & heavily promoted by the community.
Take a peek at the #OWS hashtag on FB- notice the lack of engagement & whom is posting.
Mostly #OWS inspired virtual groups trying to do outreach with Occupy..
Never trust FB. They lie lolz.

Found this from @justin2 on an fb thread on the Media page from April 19th. "So realizing Occupy Design collective offered to create an #OWS Single Color Logo/Patch/Screen/Meme Graphic for #NatGat. We'd love some ideas to get us pointed in the right direction but wondered if maybe we could use Loomio to popcorn/brainstorm in community instead of on fed book? There are stakeholders who wont use this platform & Loomio is the best tool set ive used for occupy dialogs..
Could someone add me to the group & I can begin a discussion?
A little framing for the design.
We use a very simple visual style that is scalable & easy to reproduce/remix/reuse for most settings.
Look forward to getting things flowing on Loomio!"
Is Occupy Design still willing to do this?
https://www.facebook.com/groups/573275506081781/
Justin Mon 12 May 2014 4:35PM
We've got some designs in the works but still waiting for more of the group to weigh in. so far there are only 4 folks in this convo-
waiting for more buy in- spread the word & read through the thread to see where the ideas are flowing.
Look forward to hearing the creative suggestions!
Sally G Mon 12 May 2014 4:38PM
Can we riff off Larry’s patch for Occupy Sandy N.J. (attached) with the U.S. map instead of N.J., one of the colors from the Phoenix logo, and a big chevron or star or something focussed on Sacramento?
Tricia Mon 12 May 2014 5:12PM
I'll throw out there and then step back so others can step up with creative suggestions.
How about jamming one of the officials Seals with occupy symbols.
Also, California state motto is "Eureka!" which is Greek for "I have found it"
Sally G Tue 13 May 2014 12:03AM
Seals are great, but I was thinking single-color logo.
Love the motto!
Sea Tue 13 May 2014 12:07AM
Tricia, couldn't the background of the "brand" be your picture of the dripping water which says "bring water".
Tricia Tue 13 May 2014 12:38AM
Keep the ideas coming until we say, "Eureka! We found it!" :D
Jackie Tue 13 May 2014 12:59AM
i love the idea of simple one like Sandy and think even just California with a star (or whatever marker) for Sacrament.
Occupy
National
Gathering.
purple/orange
Sea Tue 13 May 2014 1:04AM
Or how about the seal with the crowned woman changed into a Native American woman caretaking the land and water, and superimposed on your dripping water, possibly dripping out of an hour glass. Could the phoenix also be worked in?
Sally G Tue 13 May 2014 11:42AM
I think we need to make a basic decision first: simple one-color logo or complex “statement” design? Maybe we need both, and should make a separate page for each?
Tricia Tue 13 May 2014 3:39PM
The offer was for an "OWS Single Color Logo/Patch/Screen/Meme Graphic for #NatGat."
These are symbols we've identified -- for inspiration for the Occupy Design collective to get ideas:
Phoenix
Sunrise
Fist
Water
Sally G Wed 14 May 2014 4:47PM
So the easiest in one color is the fist—but it had better be green! (actually, although that was flippant regarding “whose skin color?”, I like the symbolism of green, as nature, and strength, as fist—thoughts?)
Jackie Sun 18 May 2014 2:03AM
single color, but the material is a color too. We could have purple canvas and one of our other colors (orange, yellow, pink) just Occupy National Gathering - Sacramento or NatGat3 and simple bird outline/silhouette
Jackie Sun 18 May 2014 2:05AM
oops - lol - not suggesting the stray thread as the bird.
Sally G Sun 18 May 2014 4:09AM
but it has a birdlike look. . . . !

Not sure why my pics are not showing up.

^ LOVE IT! ^

Somewhere I mentioned having a stencil todownload
here is a stencil plugin for Paint.net
http://paint.net.amihotornot.com.au/Features/Effects/Plugins/Artistic/Stencil/
Tricia Mon 19 May 2014 3:56PM
That's great! We can use that color and stencil on whatever we want to Occupy.
Tricia Mon 19 May 2014 3:57PM
I already used it in a tweet
https://twitter.com/NatGat2014/status/468418491205554176/photo/1
Sally G Tue 20 May 2014 12:59PM
Was that letter approved? I did not see that, it was not discussed on the call, why are we Tweeting it out? O.K., I saw a block, but checked it out and it is not an absolute block. However, a Tweet like this coming from the official account is a problem for me—especially as the advice was not to release it to the media until after the election.
Tricia Tue 20 May 2014 1:19PM
We did agree to write the letter. and this is to our people in Occupy, not the press. People want to know that their rights are going to be respected or they will stay away.
Sally G · Thu 24 Apr 2014 12:03AM
#NG3 = a postal code; we tried it early on and got a lot of things that related to—Nottingham, I think? Let’s stick to #NATGAT@2014
