Don't restrict profile hashtags
I don't understand why the limit is there and I know there are people who wish to describe themselves using more than five words. For example I wanted to use hashtags #Helsinki and #Lauttasaari which would have made count of my hashtags six, but I don't to put them there alone.
Later I put hashtag #lgbt as the fifth, but as I commented at Diaspora:
> I could use the five words just to communicate that I am member of gender/romantic/sexual/minority: #grsm #gsm #lgbt #lgbti #lgbtiq #lgbtiqa and I am in six words. Start specifying #demiromantic #asexual #trans #transgender #transwoman etc. and even more and that is just romantic and sexual orientations and gender. And that would still forget #feminist #linux (user) etc…

Agreed. I think that more tags should be allowed.

I see those 5 hashtags as a way to give a quick view of what interests or characterises you. No need to be exhaustive nor very precise. If you add more than 5, it quickly becomes hard to get it and we miss the initial goal. I think that if someone needs more space, it is possible to fill the biography field and give a better view of who you are.

By the way, the only difference between putting a tag in the '5 words to describe you' field and following it in the normal way is that your profile photo might appear in the side-bar on that tag's page. Those profiles are still displayed with the people who were first to put that tag in their profiles (in most cases, 5 years ago) at the top, so if it's a popular tag, there's little chance of your photo appearing there if you add it to your profile now.
As stated above, you can place extra tags in the biography field if you want them to appear in your profile when viewed by other people. Of course, these will only be available to people with whom you are sharing.
I have no objection to the limit being raised or removed, if there are no negative performance or UX implications. I can honestly say, however, that I have never referred to these tags when interacting with other users.

I think I replied to this at Diaspora:
But you could be something that you don’t hashtag all the time and that something could be something for which members people are looking for to see their ordinary lives. I think my explanation is bad.
Being able to use more than five #profile #hashtags would also have the advantage of being able to describe oneself using multiple languages. I imagine it would be useful to e.g. #pirates in addition of #minorities who I used as example at first.
The languages is also issue with GRSM as there is no way to know what language people are using trying to find people like me.

We used to have this before. I heard that in JD only the first 5 tags are considered while the rest are shown but are useless.
I understand the need for slimming down the search index but @mikaelasuomalainen here has a point when she says that she just needs more than 5 tags to express herself. It might be the same case with many people. Yes they can write the same in the description but 5 is too less and I hope 5 more could be added?
