Filming presentations
Most weeks, we have a presentation at Chi Hack Night. In 2016, we started recording them and posting on our YouTube Channel.
The HD videos are recorded and edited by Scrappers Film Group, based in Chicago, which Chi Hack Night pays for.
This thread is for discussing these videos and how we produce and promote them.

Transfer Scrappers FG contract to Chi Hack Night / DataMade Closed Fri 5 Aug 2016 8:00PM
The contract terms were updated based on the great feedback from this group, and there were no objections. I'll go ahead and execute the contract, and make the final document publicly available.
Through July 19th, the videos were paid for by a grant from Microsoft, with Code for America acting as a pass-through.
The funding CfA controls has been expended, and so the relationship with Scrappers Film Group will be transferred to DataMade, Chi Hack Night's fiscal sponsor.
We have almost hit our fundraising goal for the year, so we can afford to continue to pay for these through the end of the year.
I propose we execute this contract and proceed with using Scrappers to film our presentations.

I just caught up on the city council video. I think the youtube channel is a great resource.

Since the contract doesn't have an end date, I'm looking at the Cancellation section. It's understandable to pay in a pro-rata way, but the example they give doesn't seem to fit our situation.
We pay for a video, which is a package deal of "filming, editing, publishing". I don't see a situation where we'd refuse to let them finish part of that package. I think it would be better if there was a time based cancellation, where we pay 100% of the video package (still, per video), but that we give them 7 days notice that we don't want them to film future events.

That's a good point @stevenvance. I'll make that request.

So this means that, technically speaking, DataMade will own and have rights for the video content created at/by Chi Hack Night?
Derek Eder Thu 4 Aug 2016 2:50PM
Yes, technically speaking. Under the old contract the rights owner was Code for America.

Ate they published under a Creative Commons license or some such? If not, should they?
Derek Eder Thu 4 Aug 2016 7:29PM
Wow - good question @donchartier. Yes they should!

Email to Scrappers:
Hi Reshmi -
Ok, overall this looks good. I shared it with our leadership council and there were a few changes we'd like to make:
Can we add an end date to this contract of Jan 19, 2017 (1 year since Scrappers started filming)? We can renew the contract again after that date.
Since we pay for filming, editing and publishing all in one package, I don't foresee us paying for only 80% of your services.Ccould we update the cancellation policy to written notice of 7 days in advance of an event?
We'd like to assign ownership of the videos to Chi Hack Night under the Creative Commons 3.0 license.
Let me know if you have any questions!
