“You can have a Walmart move into a neighborhood and they can provide plenty of food and address food insecurity, but all the profits are extracted from the community.... What we’re trying to do is activate the agency within our community so that people see themselves as having the ability to shape not only the food system but also the other systems that have influence over our lives.” Malik Yakini of the Detroit People’s Food Co-op & the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network

I had a meeting with a lawyer from Buddle Findlay last week to advance my thinking and plans for a new form of non-profit, multi stakeholder co-operative here in Ōtautahi.

We are toying with creating a non-profit limited liability co-operative with 4 different modes of capital....

25% of capital available as financial capital - shares to be purchased

25% of capital available as relational capital - shares are given in reciprocity for acts of service

25% of capital held as social capital - held by our current trust

25% of capital held as natural capital - held in ownership of Papatuanuku (potentially by local hapu)

Our constitution will state that all decisions made by the co-operative have to honour the living ecology of our community.

The activity of the co-operative is aimed at building community sovereignty through co-ownership - specifically around food sovereignty, which underpins a lot of baseline measures of wellbeing.

Keen for any korero around this...💚

Possibly 'preaching to the choir' here, in that possibly anyone interested in food resilience will have heard of this book...but I just read this recent publication, 'GROW', by photographer Sophie Merkens: https://www.sophiemerkens.com/grow

'Sophie Merkens takes us on a journey across Aotearoa, meeting 35 inspiring women who find meaning and connection through food. From mothers, gardeners, hunters, chefs, experts and hobbyists, their conversations dive deep into how food influences their lives. Grow is a refreshingly honest and insightful book about women, food and connection.'

The articles are quite brief...the photography is beautiful. It's captures an interesting spectrum of women working in the food industry/food resilience/food localisation.

Did anyone see the TV3 documentary on ‘child poverty’ last night?

They covered food insecurity as one of the major issues.

Palmerston North’s food rescue store ‘Just Zilch’ was in it, too.

(It is called ‘Child Poverty Revisited’ and is available to view on the Three Now website).

Interested to hear what y’all thought… if you watch it. 🌻
