Hosting: what, where, why?
We need good hosting. From the technical point of view we need an infrastructure to carry safely a set of applications for as much as say 50 users. It needs to be inexpensive, reliable and politically secure (I expect several activist people/groups to join soon. So please provide suggestions.

My favourite is https://1984hosting.com/
1. They have both shared and VPS hosting. And relatively good pricing.
2. They are related to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Modern_Media_Institute and they declare loyalty to the freedom and civil rights values.
3. They are located in Iceland which makes them politically robust (take down notices not expected to work there).
4. They are 'green': https://1984hosting.com/about/
Your thoughts?

Sounds like a dream to me.
I looked for something on iceland – even mailed the mailpile team for help but to no avail. I decided to have some working code first before asking people to lend me servers– but if we could sustainably crowdfund something like this – it would be great.

Marcin, make an educated guess, which option shall we need for the first 30 users and then I will try to arrange some funding. No promises, ofc, but there are certain chances.. :-)

I´m with 1984 and am very happy with their quality and service. And attitude.

Do you have a way to make them give us a test hosting? 3 months for example? Or a substantial discount?
Dominik Fri 3 Oct 2014 9:39AM
Just wrote them. Will keep you posted here.

Ok, here´s what they say:
Hi Dominik,
Sure, we'll pitch in the first month's VPS cost. Just go ahead and put it in your user's cart and let me know and I'll process it.
Best,
Moe

Frankly speaking I don´t want to be the one who´s the official client/ user in the end, but I already ask them again and it is no problem to transfer the one month for free to any other account. I just have to let know Moe...
These are their VPS offers: https://1984hosting.com/product/vps/

Hmmm wrong topic... :)

Loomio somehow posted my comment twice. I deleted it here. Please see the 1984er answer above...

ugh! It's a kind of problematic, especially the political security. Someone needs to know you to give you a (v)host with root access at his place.
Otherwise it's paid hosting, including secureones (like cyber bunkers etc) but it's expensive.
So maybe at frieds'
- Hackerspace?
- Harcesz?
