Introductory Conference Call/Hangout Agenda?

MC Matthew Cropp Public Seen by 132

Reading through everything that's been posted thus-far got me thinking that It'd be good to schedule a google hangout conversation with the agenda of discussing visions, options, and strategies, as well as for the opportunity for those of us who have rallied to the flag to introduce ourselves to each other. Below is the beginning of an agenda for such a call, which I'd aim to keep to 90 minutes; please propose amendments, additions, and/or alternatives in the comments:

-Personal Introductions: Everyone takes up to 2 minutes introducing their backgrounds, the scopes of interest, experience, and skills they bring to the project, and their realistic potential level of involvement, contribution. [30 minutes?]
-Review of Current Status of Potential Deal: Scale, players, latest news, etc. [10 minutes]
-Strategy Options Discussion: Participants summarize ideas on potential strategic approaches to the problem [max 5 minutes per participant, max 30 minutes]
-Formations of working groups to elaborate on proposed strategic approaches, build infrastructure, etc. [10 min]
-Closing thoughts from participants [10 min]

Once we have a sense of what we want to talk about, then let's discuss when...

How about Friday afternoon? Like about 4 pm MT? Would that work?
@chriscook1 @whit537 @priscillagrim @matthewcropp @sureshfernando @arminsteuernagel1 etc.

SF

I could make that work

A call for everyone or just the people tagged here? Oh, I just saw Alanna Krause's note that it is a call for everyone.

NS

Nathan Schneider Thu 6 Oct 2016 2:55AM

Anyone who wants to join! Sorry I didn't tag you. I would love love love if you could join!

CC

Chris Cook Thu 6 Oct 2016 12:09AM

Works for me. Late but not too late.

AI

Alanna Irving Thu 6 Oct 2016 12:22AM

@ntnsndr if you don't mind I'm going to backseat facilitate you ;)

Raise a proposal that says:

I'm joining the video call this Friday 4PM MDT (6PM EDT/ 3PM PDT)

This is an open invitation to join the call to talk about the BuyTwitter movement. We know not everyone can make this time, so we'll report back what we discuss and raise proposals about any decisions on Loomio.

Hit the green thumb if you can make it, and note anything you'd like on the agenda. To join to call, [link or info about getting on].

This will notify everyone in the group and also give people a way to "RSVP" so you have an idea of who's coming and you can start co-creating an agenda easily.

Nathan Schneider Thu 6 Oct 2016 3:05AM

Thanks:)

I've got at dinner commitment that evening, but will try to make as much of it as I can. I think having the initial conversation sooner rather than l8r is important, so my potentially limited availability shouldn't be a barrier to this.

@ntnsndr if you're changing the video tool, setting the outcome statement on the proposal is a useful way to let everyone know the new link

MC

Matthew Cropp Fri 7 Oct 2016 2:26AM

@ntnsndr unfortunately, I will be running between meetings, so I will not be able to run tech on the "Hangouts on Air" recorded hangout, but if you have a youtube account, I believe this link should bring you to the correct page to schedule one. https://www.youtube.com/my_live_events?action_create_live_event=1

You can then launch the hangout from Creator Studio > Livestreaming > Events

If Nathan doesn't feel comfortable doing this, is there anyone else who knows how to set up and run a Hangouts on Air who can facilitate the tech this time?

SF

Suresh Fernando Fri 7 Oct 2016 5:52AM

@ntnsndr - will there be an agenda? It should also be facilitated. I'm comfortable with your facilitating if you want.

NS

Nathan Schneider Fri 7 Oct 2016 1:34PM

I'm assuming we'd follow the basic agenda that @matthewcropp proposed at the start of this thread. With the exception that I can't stay more than an hour or so because I have childcare duties.

I agree on needing facilitation. I'd be willing to do it, unless there's someone else who would like to. I'm only a so-so facilitator, so if anyone has strong experience in that area, please step forward! But if it's me, I'll do my best.

SF

Suresh Fernando Fri 7 Oct 2016 2:39PM

@matthewcropp ... apologies... yes, this agenda looks good to me!

TM

Tom McDonough Fri 7 Oct 2016 4:23PM

Looking forward to the meetup. I'll be in and out.

TM

Tom McDonough Fri 7 Oct 2016 5:33PM

Just discovered I have no mic here. I'll be watching and listening. Here are some comments I would have made:
- I sketched out the model that Nathan referred to in his article. It assumed that a group representing 40% of the shares would vote for the co-op. I expressed this as 3 million users would purchase 100 shares each (now less than $2000). I think the 40% is critical for a transformation to co-op. Without this type of interest and commitment, financing would come from the same market forces that took over Twitter in the first place.
- Part of the 40% might include Twitter employees who would agree to cash out at the market price but stay in for the co-op.
- If 2 or 3 million users are needed, how do we recruit them? How can we promote the co-op concept to this larger group?
- As the potential purchasers back off, a stock price of $17 looks realistic. But how much of even this lower value can be attributed to celebrity accounts? And do we want to pay for this? Gets back to the buy or build issue.

NS

Nathan Schneider Fri 7 Oct 2016 9:58PM

I've adjusted the agenda somewhat and posted it here:
https://etherpad.net/p/BuyTwitterCall

Feel free to add suggestions on the pad below the text.

Getting an error message when I try to join the Hangout. Is it just me?

NS

Nathan Schneider Fri 7 Oct 2016 11:03PM

Great call, all!

@sureshf took responsibility for formalizing a design for the investment cooperative; I'm going to work on guerrilla marketing with @tristancopleysmith. @thomaseuler1 and @asolache will work on setting up a call next week.

Also, we encourage everyone to read and comment on @thomaseuler1's strategy proposal here.

All these are open groups, which anyone is welcome to join.

CC

Chris Cook Fri 7 Oct 2016 11:26PM

Dud mike unfortunately. I'm in for the Investment Co-op sub-group if there's interest in exploring beyond debt & equity. @sureshf

SF

Suresh Fernando Fri 7 Oct 2016 11:35PM

@chriscook1 The way that I'm thinking about this is that the Working Group we are creating is the Finance and Structure Group that has the responsibility for painting a picture of what a transaction would look like and how to structure both the transaction as well as the new organization that is created.

At this point I'm completely open to what that might look like. We can explore different types of transactions; standard and 'non-standard'.

We decided to move forward with building momentum for this initiative by 'pursuing Twitter' since, even if we are unsuccessful, we will be leveraging all the Twitter momentum.

So... if you want to advance a non-standard transaction, it would be helpful if you could put a few thoughts together that included specifics relating to Twitter and what it would take to pull this off.

What do you think?

SF

Suresh Fernando Sat 8 Oct 2016 12:05AM

Also @chriscook1 ... would be cool if you sent your email to @samtoland so that he can invite you to Slack. Allows for real time communication.

We definitely could use your creative mind on this problem!

Not sure if there's a separate YouTube link that was generated to view the occasion post-meeting? I tried the WATCH link to no avail, but perhaps this is b.c. I'm on mobile, but maybe that link was only for LIVE watching

NS

Nathan Schneider Sat 8 Oct 2016 9:35PM

Darn, @coopchange, I'm sorry, I think I made a mistake and it didn't get recorded. I'm new to the Hangout on Air thing. The main takeaways were:

  1. Consensus about the general direction as articulated here
  2. Agreement to create groups for a) drafting a manifesto for outreach, and b) beginning to develop a legal structure.

Bummer about no record! :(

Was there any pad?

Yes, there was a pad, to which I've added a few notes about outcomes:

Has an open conference call being scheduled? Maybe I think it would be a good idea for those that are interested in moving this overall process forward to get on a Hangout again and to figure out a path that we can agree on...

Maybe this already exists and I'm just out of the loop ;-)

@thomaseuler1 ... I know you've been working on setting up the calls. Any news?

TE

Thomas Euler Tue 25 Oct 2016 7:07AM

Not really. I got feedback re scheduling by like 4 people and it didn't appear like that many were interested. Still, I agree: hangouts and more personal, face2face discussion would be great - I asked for this a couple of times on Slack as well - but it appears to be kind of hard on the overall-group level.

But please feel free to pick this up and try again. I'm all in favor of it and think it would be helpful.

Is there another introductory call planned? How do you on-board new-comers?

I am really excited in the project and the idea of changing the economy of this and other very useful platform so that they can be their best. This can be done in so many ways, I'd like to know where this group's at.

Mark Latham Thu 12 Jan 2017 8:11PM

Hi Andrea! I suggest going to our Platform Purchasing Co-op subgroup page and clicking to ask to join it. You will also see links there to our buytwitter slack channel -- good to join.

JG

john gieryn Thu 12 Jan 2017 8:39PM

after you join that sub-group, you'll see there's a call being planned concerning general strategy and infrastructure in this thread
