In what ways can we democratize the University of Amsterdam?

What are ways to make our university more democratic? It has already been proposed to democratically elect a rector, but in what other ways could we increase democratic inclusion of students and staff into the decision-making of the university?

I would especially be interested in solutions that fit into the already existing power structure: think of the roles of the Centrale Studentenraad (CSR), Centrale Ondernemingsraad (COR), ASVA, and the student councils of individual faculties.

FSR, CSR and COR get a vote for the appointment of a new dean?

In my opinion it is important to have a bigger say in the plans that are made for our university in stead of in the choice of persons. Because the downside of elections for the board is that it might change a lot then, what might be problematic for the implementation of long-term plans.

I agree with Linda, but I do think that we should also keep a (democratic) eye on the supervisory board. They have the power to protect their friends in the CvB if they want to.

I gave a presentation a couple of days ago:
Re-Inventing democracy: How the power of ideas can replace the idea of power http://www.slideshare.net/Matthijs85/reinventing-democracy-how-the-power-of-ideas-can-replace-the-idea-of-power

Using systems like these, we basically change from voting on persons, to voting on ideas.

Systems like these pose great possibility for us to govern ourselves, instead of others governing over us.

However, thinking inside the box, in solutions that fit the existing power structure:
- The CSR, COR and ASVA should be able to co-decide with the CvB on all issues that concern them
- Every 'power position' (like the CvB or the deans) should be elected democratically (the deans by the faculty members, and the CvB by all students and employees. Also including supporting personal, like the cleaners etc.)

Agreeing with Matthijs on the basic idea of electing ideas instead of persons. As we have seen the General Assemblies are rich with ideas and because of their relative massivity they tend to correct one another.

Let's also face the current situation that the law allows only for a limited kind of assembling (Raad+Bestuur). Until that changes it might be possible to do the following:

Whenever there is meeting of Raad and Bestuur, the Raad invites the faculty to assemble behind them, to lively represent them. Because the faculty is never too big, and never too small, enough just enough concerned faculty members will assemble.

Procedure: On determining the agenda fom both sides, the Raad asks the assembly to propose points. Then there are Updates, and then on every point on which a decision must be made the Raad in fact Temperature checks the assembly and then only turn his head to the Bestuur.

The Bestuur agrees to lengthen the very important meetings so that Live Representation con General Assembly can happen.

@johnpoussart good idea!
We already have a 'Dutch version of Podemos'; it is called the Piratenpartij: https://piratenpartij.nl/

I do have contact with Podemos and gave a presentation in Spain. Just as with Podemos, the main point of the Pirate Party is democratization. Also see the slides of this presentation I gave in the Maagdenhuis: www.slideshare.net/Matthijs85/reinventing-democracy-how-the-power-of-ideas-can-replace-the-idea-of-power
I am intending to increase contact between Podemos and the Pirate party

The Pirate Party is measured as the biggest party in Iceland now. After the crisis, they challenged corruption and hubris, and played a large role in the revolutionary democratic reforms that have been accomplished in Iceland. More info:
