Language Matters!
Nest aims to be a welcoming & inclusive space for all. One of the ways that we can be inclusive and respectful to other Nestlings is by the way we talk to others and assumptions we make in our language, especially around gender.
Here are a few tips:
* DO ask someone their pronouns. They could be a she/her, he/him, they/theirs etc. You can’t tell by looking!
* DO consider doing introductions with name and pronouns for everyone in a group, for example in a workshop
* DON’T use gendered terms for groups of people, e.g. Ladies & Gentlemen, Guys, Dudes etc. DO use non-gendered terms instead such as Folks, or Gentle-them!
* DON’T ask what is in someone’s pants, that’s downright rude and none of your beeswax!
* DON’T ask what or who someone was ‘born as’ or their ‘real name’ but just accept what they say
We don’t always get it right all the time, and that’s OK. But we can try our best and apologise if we get it wrong. A quick apology and correction and move on is all that is needed.
