The “pirate” label, which had been used by the media and film industries in campaigns against copyright infringement, is a reappropriation of the word.
In sociology and cultural studies, reappropriation is the cultural process by which a group reclaims—re-appropriates—terms or artifacts that were previously used in a way disparaging of that group.

yes, this is a common question and we should explain our rationale in the constitution.

We should make it clear on why are we using the word Pirate.

People need to know what we are doing and why we are doing it the way we are doing it. I think the above explains it properly.

We know the original meaning of pirates were attacking ships and looting. Now if the society can accept equating copying to this act, they can also accept us redefining it a second time to sharing. Why double standards?
There is a clear reason to associate sharing to something bad like killing and looting. It makes people stop doing it because everyone has some inherent goodness. There are two approaches to it. First taken by RMS that we should reject the term. The second approach is taken by Rick Falkving and other pirates that we are not afraid of the term and we are also capable of redefining it for a second time.

If the society accepts sharing is piracy, then what is the problem with accepting piracy is sharing?
We can have a caption like this,
"If sharing is piracy, then pirates are just sharing".

But we have to make it clear, our stands on the meaning of 'Piracy' used by the society and us. We have to express our stand on the digital piracy as well.

We should use this opportunity to question the double standards of society. If they can readily accept unauthorized copying as piracy, why can't they accept pirates want to free knowledge?
Our choosing of the word pirate is a redefinition and a protest.

Some of the opinions that I got from others on the word Pirate.
For the word Hacker- the origin of the word was in good sense, but later the society maligned the word afterwards.
But Unlike Hacker, origin of the word Pirate is itself bad and was associated with stealing from others.
My Opinion-
We should Make it clear on what terms are we using the word Pirate.
