ECA London JULY 2018 - Tate Modern - Tate Exchange
Dear all We have been talking with Nicole and David from European Commons Assembly that we can host the next Urban/cultural Commons gathering in London in 2018. We are a grassroots organisation called public works www.publicworksgroup.net. A collective that are trying to implement Commons in neighbourhoods in the tough global city of London. We were invited to become associate partners at Tate modern and Last year at the Tate we launched "The Civic University"as part of an institutional critique of universities as well as being a new initiative which is to support construction of urban and cultural commons through knowledge sharing and debates on civic values. The number of audiences was astonishing (2800 people in 8 days). Although we understand the problematics of an establishment such as the Tate, we thought its a great platform for us to meet and spread and share the ideas of Commons, with the international audience the Tate attracts. We also have spaces in community projects we are involved in which we can host other events. These spaces are obviously more local and specific to communities. It would be great to hear if this is something everyone thinks is a good idea. If so we can start planning and involve whoever is interested in developing what the 1-2 days at the Tate could become to support the Commons movement. Also we have links with lots of local projects, schools, Local authorities, universities, UN Habitat and the London Mayors office (GLA) etc etc so if we all think these connections are helpful then we can also think about inviting them. Look forward to hearing from you all.

Dear Oliver and indeed anyone else if you wish to have a skype meeting to discuss this and then Andy takes those ideas to Madrid and we post the discussion on Loomio for others to see and comment that would be great. What do you think?

Again, this is why I took detailed notes of our original conversation back in May: https://www.loomio.org/d/cyCuK9QW/eca-meeting-in-london-tate-proposal-by-torange-
This is in the working principles of the Assembly - to record conversations publicly: Maybe indeed loomio isn't the best tool for this and we need another deliberation platform and to save loomio for decisions...
I could do a Zoom this Friday. But I also don't want to exclude too many people....

Sorry, working principles here: http://europeancommonsassembly.eu/working-principles/

Excellent idea. Let´s set a time. David

Hi David and Nicole as you know the Madrid program better if you let me know a time Andy is more flexible.
Nicole Leonard Tue 10 Oct 2017 3:44PM
Does this mean you've got the date changed to July? I agree that this would be better given capacity...

Hello fellow Commoners, I'm dropping in here to say I will not be able to get to Madrid as I am teaching then. I'm sad about that. But I support an ECA at the Tate especially as St Ives has the first English community charter (citizens taking responsibility for their commons) and Tate St Ives should be a part of this conversation that we are embarking on. I will be going to the official launch of the St Ives Charter on 28 October and will see if I can connect with Tate St Ives people at that time. Torange, if this seems a good idea, can you help me by sending your correspondence with Tate so far and how you framed the ECA proposal?. And as a footnote.... the Falkirk Charter, followed by the community consultation on Unconventional Oil and Gas in Scotland that the Chartering Network helped to deliver, was one of the wedges that led to last week's ban on UOG by the Scottish Government. We are celebrating! Isabel in Totnes, Devon.

Hey Isabel. I think we have already been in contact via email as I asked for your charter. Do you have contact with Tate St Ives. Absolutely agree would be great to make links. Perhaps you, Oliver, me and Andy should have a virtual meeting that Andy can then take to Madrid for face to face with Nicole and David. what you think?
Torange Khonsari Tue 10 Oct 2017 3:14PM
Dear all apologies for not answering all of you personally. I am super happy there is so much interest. I have to change the month of the ECA though as Tate have told me as we want the entire floor over the whole week they can only host us in JULY 2018 which I am happy about as it gives us more time to raise necessary funds. I amend the post to show that. I answer Isabel and Oliver directly and get Andy to arrange face to face in Madrid as I cant be there unfortunately
Torange Khonsari Tue 10 Oct 2017 6:19PM
Yes as Tate had no availability with space for what we required in terms of space and a whole week it's now mid July

Oh so much better. March would have been a stretch.. We should get someone from European Alternatives to join a meeting in Madrid too @daphnebuellesbach

Hello Torange, good idea to have a virtual meet and I am tied up in teaching an intensive from Sunday til 25th October. A quick Zoom this Friday is the best I can offer. Any good for the four of us?

Exactly, dear Nicole, I am grateful the conversation popped up.
Loomio is a decision making tool. And a decision making tool has not
been designed for discussions. That is why I recommended Discourse,
but the decision had been taken and seemed to be unsurmountable a
few months ago. Now that the practice indeed reveals the problems -
I am all for reconsidering loomio as a platform for ECA-discussions.
my very best

Maybe it would be good to create a new thread on this topic not to hijack the Tate Modern thread, I guess under ECA Governance?? I just would note that Loomio is indeed intended for discussions & deliberations, but probably not for recording meeting notes & collective writing which Nicole was talking about.
Oliver Kalleinen · Tue 10 Oct 2017 1:20PM
I am not in Madrid but would like to follow the ECA/TATE conversation, preferably here at Loomio or whatever other platform ECA decides to use in the future. So if you have an offline meeting would be great to share the ideas back here. Best. o
