Hi Matt, did anything come of this?
Irena P Mon 16 Jan 2023 5:12PM
Sounds good. I have encouraged Vivien to get in touch with Solid Fund and I'd be pleasantly surprised if she does... she's overwhelmed by operational stuff tbh and there's only three of them there. One of them actually does want to go part time Matt. Whoever goes in ideally can implement worker co-op culture and reassure the others of the difference it can make. A proper worker challenge. Look forward to any updates Matt/Cath x
Matt Nicholson Mon 16 Jan 2023 2:31PM
Just sent Vivien an email about the role. If Cath's suggestion fits Waste Chasers needs, I'd be keen to apply on a part-time/job-share basis.

workers.coop is on a mission to motivate, educate and organise worker co-ops. We’re in startup mode, and now looking for a freelancer or studio to support us with generating and publishing digital communications.
This contract is initially for 24 days delivery over the next 3 months at a £175 day rate. It is likely this contract will be extended based on how the role develops.
Cath M in Bentley (A Commune in the North/Radical Routes/Platform6) Fri 2 Dec 2022 12:11PM
Gosh - being a single person trying to save a co-op's culture sounds very hard. Would make sense to me that they apply to Solid Fund for a significant amount more money in order to have two people job-sharing for a little while - eg apply for cash for a 0.25 person for 4 months and two people job share 1.25 FTE. Otherwise whoever goes for it would need immense reserves of energy, enthusiasm and tenacity
Irena P Fri 2 Dec 2022 10:23AM
Thanks Dave, I will definitely ask them to apply to Solid Fund. They do need a couple new contracts and at least an extra pair of hands (doable if they advertise). But they’re so stretched atm they struggle to admin for these things. Also onboarding new support staff to worker model not being done so they leave if doing mundane jobs. @petramorris also aware of them.
Dave Hollings Fri 2 Dec 2022 8:36AM
This sounds like the sort of situation Solid Fund was set up for - a small worker co-op which needs a little bit of investment to survive. It wouldn't cost much to pay for a co-op smart phone, a Zoom account and the hosting fee for a website for a year - maybe £500. I would be happy to see such an application if they committed to joining Solid Fund in return.

A worker member (trouble-shooter) needed for Bradford Waste Chasers. Doing a £100K t/o in trade but don't have a smart phone between them, no advertising, no social media, no zoom etc. They're looking to recruit a worker who can lift them into the co-op difference and help save this fully operational but exhausted worker co-op. @Andrew Woodcock @Mark Simmonds (Co-op Culture & Platform 6) know anyone?? Would hate to see a fully trading worker co-op with contracts in place heading for the shredder. Worker co-op Waste Chasers https://www.wastechasers.co.uk/ handle confidential data shredding, recycling paper waste, want to recruit a worker member who can also implement stronger co-op concepts across their small team. Based in Shipley, Bradford they pick-up from around West Yorkshire for small and large jobs. They have good contracts, t/over six figures but static, hardly ever advertise, make small surplus each year, would appreciate more worker-co-op values implemented there by a good worker co-op worker! Hi Dave
I haven't, and I'll give it a go...but, like many "coop" pubs, I've found them to be wholly uninterested in the coop side of things, sadly. I'll see if i can find some one who might be a bit more engaged - let me know if you know any names.
Thanks for the thought

Have you had a conversation with the co-operatively owned Spotted Cow in Holbrook just up the hill?
I don't know if they would be interested in a microbrewery but its worth asking the question.
Thanks

Coop brewery seeks new home/coop....
Hi folks
very sad to say that my time with Bartleby's brewery has come to an end and we're looking to sell up.
we're currently putting the equipment etc up for sale, independent of the coop/business https://www.siba.co.uk/awpcp/show-ad/?id=34340
but we're also very much open to talking to a coop (existing or possibly to be formed for this) to discuss possibilities of taking bartleby's on in some form.
The brewery is currently in Belper, in Derbyshire, but the kit can potentially be relocated.
We're asking for £30,000 if we sell the equipment commercially, but we can negotiate this considerably if a coop want to take it on.
Please feel free to spread the word, and obviously get in touch if you have any questions.
Matt

Hi matt, this is not quite at the same level but some organisations like school for social entrepreneurs in devon run various courses (some fully funded) where they help people set up or scale up social enterprises and though they are not just about co-ops they do included looking at co-ops as a potential structure and they often include visits to existing co-ops for the students of the program; they came to visit us (harvest workers co-op) recently as part of their start-up program with a group of young people... I imagine there are similar organisations around uk, thou of course this is much smaller scale and a bit niche so may or may not be of help for your ideas, but just in case is of interest...

Hi all
I'm working on a project at loughborough university, looking into how we can get coops into spaces such as Careers Services, Graduate placement schemes, etc.
Does any one know of either:
Any attempts to do this at other universities
Any coops/groups which might be interested in having student placements, attending careers fairs, etc etc
Any other pertinent thoughts/infortmation.
Lastly, any one know any one we could contact at either Central England or Mid-Counties Coops regarding this? We're keen to make sure actual coops are the priority, but thought we might get some more traction with coop group too.
Cheers

We are recruiting new co-operator trustees: We need you to help grow the new era of co-op and community businesses as we move to our 50th year in 2023 and beyond.
What we do:
ICOF Ltd trading as Co-operative and Community Finance or CCF is the Lender for Social Purpose, lending to ethical businesses since 1973. We offer fair, supportive, and tailored loan finance to meet the needs of a range of co-operatives, social enterprises, and community businesses, across the UK, that are democratically owned controlled by their members. We also provide project and loan management support and consultancy across the social investment sector.
What skills and experience we are looking for:
Post Covid-19 and approaching our 50th Anniversary in 2023 we will be moving into an exciting new phase for the organisation and are looking for both experienced Trustees and individuals looking for their first role, to join us on our journey.
We are looking for new Trustees that have energy and skills and experience across from the co-operative, social economy and community business sectors. Individuals with enterprise, small business or co-op practitioner/ adviser experience would be particularly welcome, as well as individuals with expertise in accountancy and finance, to help us fill skills gaps on our existing board. We will consider members* and anyone with a particular interest in Co-ops, Employee Ownership, Community Wealth Building, Community Business and individuals keen to help us build a fairer future in local communities.
As well as nonspecific Trustee/ Director roles we are also looking for individuals who would be interested in potentially becoming a future Treasurer or Chairperson. And would also very much like to hear from women and individuals of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic heritage to help us further improve the equality and diversity of our board.
What is the commitment?
The board meets five times a year, during the day: this comprises four standard meetings plus an AGM. We typically also hold an in person two-day business planning/ strategy session. Trustees that have specific roles such a Chairperson or Treasurer will have extra responsibilities and will also be required to attend occasional subcommittee meetings.
This is an unpaid role but all reasonable travel and out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed and it looks great on your CV!

Drop-in Chats:
Thursday 7th April 2022 @ 2:00pm
Tuesday 3rd May 2022 @ 11:00am
Please also connect with us on Twitter @coop_finance and Facebook @CoopCommFinance
To request a nomination/ application form please contact [email protected] directly. We will require you to complete a short application/ nomination form*, provide us with an up-to-date CV, and attend an online interview if shortlisted. We are also happy to accept video applications addressing the same application questions, if that’s easier for you, but please be advised that videos will be shared widely with ICOF members, if you are successful at interview.
Application deadline is Noon Monday 9th May 2022 (we will contact you asap to tell you if you have been selected for interview)
Short interviews will take place via Zoom week commencing 16th May 2022
Thank-you so much for your interest and we look forward to hearing from you.
* Members and Nominations
ICOF Ltd and its associated businesses have open membership and nomination enshrined in their legal make-up and any member can nominate themselves, or others, to be considered for board appointment at the AGM. This year, the board, in order to proactively address skills gaps and improve board diversity, are introducing a shortlisting and interview process and widening the search for new board members. Any existing member can of course still apply or nominate individuals, but we ask they do so through the process set out in the information above and in the Trustee Recruitment Pack available. Please contact us if you have any questions.

There is a vacancy for a job as a kitchen porter at the warehouse cafe in Birmingham: https://uk.linesjob.com/job/kitchen-porter-assistant-the-warehouse-cafe-co-operative-def37d6fe990d643/?utm_campaign=google_jobs_apply&utm_source=google_jobs_apply&utm_medium=organic Obviously there is lots of scope for the role not just being kitchen porter but including lots of other things too. I mention it in this group as there is also a vacancy going in my shared (almost co-op) house !
Graham Thu 25 Jul 2019 4:33PM
Of course I should read the job blurb myself, but thanks very much for this Cath. C-UK competing with it's own members always was contentious and remains so, nearly twenty years on. Maybe the new recruit can teach them how to cooperate?
Cath M in Bentley (A Commune in the North/Radical Routes/Platform6) Thu 25 Jul 2019 4:14PM
well, it's sort of both - not so much the teaching staff how to be co-operative, more the supporting of the business to make decisions in line with co-op Values and principles (I think) - they describe it better than me on their web page.
Your point is shared though - this goes back to the fairly contentious decision for CUK to offer paid-for co-op development services at all. Which they do and which a fair few CD folks aren't happy about. CUK's goal is to be the go-to access point for anyone wanting to know anything about co-ops - we (CD folk) hope that they signpost as well as offering their own services, but I think they pretty much only recommend other people (and channel work) through the Hive, and other programmes. I could be wrong about this.
They're looking to offer more services now that their own staff are more skilled up in co-op working and culture. Doubtless this further impacts on the services offered by CD advisors without the marketing capacity of CUK.
I'm circulating the advert with my new board member hat on, to make sure it's a good person who gets the job and also so that Forum members are aware of this new development.
Graham Thu 25 Jul 2019 2:32PM
I'm not clear. Is this person about teaching the people inside how to work cooperatively, or creating an outward-facing service about how to work cooperatively, or both? Certainly from your brief description Cath it sounds like there are plenty of skilled people already working in the cooperative economy that could be developing and delivering excellent service offerings to C-UK and to its members and others about culture, values-driven organisational best practice & sustainability.
In terms of procurement policy and with a community wealth building mindset, would it not be preferable to seek to procure this expertise, or at least some of it, on a contractual basis from existing cooperative providers rather than recruit?
Cath M in Bentley (A Commune in the North/Radical Routes/Platform6) Thu 25 Jul 2019 9:15AM
hi folks, the Senior Mgt Team at Co-ops UK in Manchester are now managing each other in a sort of collective way and Co-ops UK is itself a co-op. They are recruiting for a 'Head of Culture & Performance' to champion co-op values & ways of working within how CUK operates and to develop a new coaching service and new advisory services around co-op culture, values-driven organisational best practice & sustainability. Deadline for applications is Sunday 18th August. Here's a link to the recruitment pack: https://s.coop/recruitmentpack

Advertisers needed Next week we are going to reprint 400 copies of the 2015 edition of 'How to Set Up a Workers Co-op' - we have entirely run out of hard copies, but don't have capacity for updating it at the moment, I'm afraid.
Not all the previous advertisers want to re-advertise, so I'm looking to fill some gaps (see further down).
Deadline: It would be good to know by noon on Thursday 22nd July whether you want to go for it and ideal to have the artwork to me by 1pm, Friday 25th July.
If you miss that deadline but wish you hadn't, it's worth giving me a call to check whether there's still space available and whether our timeline has changed - but I've told Footprint I'll have the artwork to them by Monday, so it's unlikely.
We're aiming to get them ready in time for the RR gathering starting 9th August, but it might be later. The print run will be 400 likely lasting two years.
You can see what the guide looks like online at
http://www.radicalroutes.org.uk/publicdownloads/setupaworkerscoop-lowres.pdf
It is downloaded from the website a LOT.
Rates:
Quarter page - £50 (60mm x 85mm)
Half-page - £90 (85mm x 124mm)
Full page - £170 (124 x 180mm)
Full and associate members of RR get a 50% discount on these rates.
What spaces we need to fill
4 x 1/4 page adverts are definitely needed, and another 1/4 is probably needed.
3 x 1/2 page adverts and 3 whole page adverts are probably needed.
Artwork
We can accept any format, but please ensure that graphics are 266dpi or
above. We can be flexible with sizes but due to printing method, we cannot do
colour and print quality is low - avoid subtle photos or faint tones.
Please send them to me via a file-sharing website or service, like mailbigfile, wetransfer or dropbox.
thanks all, love, cath x

Ways Forward 7
CBC are seeking co-operators/co-operative organisations to partner in the organisation of Ways Forward 7 (working title: Co-operatives For The Many) conference on either 5th or 12th April 2019. This is with a view to those partner(s) taking ‘ownership’ of Ways Forward in future years.
Ways Forward conferences started in 2014, addressing the crises at the Co-operative Bank and Group. The annual event consistently addresses and influences the key topical issues for the wider UK co-operative movement, with strong international co-operative input. High profile key note speakers have included Shadow Ministers John McDonnell, Rebecca Long Bailey and Angela Rayner, former CEO of the Co-operative Group Sir Graham Melmoth, and International Co-operative Alliance leaders Ariel Guarco, Iain Macdonald and Gabriella Buffa.
The conference is affordable and accessible to a range of intergenerational co-operators, through relevant programme and early bird tickets less than £50 and some free subsidised places. Sponsorship from a range of organisations ensures more freedom of speech with no single corporate agenda. Previous conference outputs may be found at www.cbc.coop
Conference organisers are paid reasonable fees and expenses for their work, and co-ordinate volunteer advisors, speakers and helpers.
CBC have already had constructive talks with Co-op Culture and are seeking additonal expressions of interest from those interested in taking an active role in the delivery of Ways Forward 7 – a real opportunity to shape the future of UK co-operative development.
To express an interest, please contact [email protected] with a view to taking part in an on-line Zoom call of potential partners in mid-January Doodle poll link.

Email to RR Trading Coops Forum, from [email protected]:
Hello friends,
Some of you may have come across Voice of Youth, a small youth workers' cooperative in Hackney, London... We have had a wonderful few years but unfortunately most of the current members need to move on, and perhaps the time has come to close. Before planning for closure, we want to see if there is a possibility of handing over the co-op to new members. So we wanted to ask:
1) Do you know anyone who might be interested? Feel free to forward this email and/or send out the attached information:
https://voice-of-youth.org/2018/01/20/voy-will-close-unless-you-can-step-up-and-take-it-on/
We have already had an encouraging response! But we won't know much til we meet people at the open evening.
2) Do any of you have experience or advice on either handing over a co-op or closing a co-op? We are not able to pay for any advice at the moment and we completely appreciate that some of you need to charge for advice in order to keep your own co-ops going, so no expectations at all! But any thoughts, advice, encouragement, do's and don'ts, etc, will be gratefully received! We will, of course, be happy to share our own experiences once we're through this stage.
Thanks.
In solidarity,
Tania and all at Voice of Youth

Solidarity Economy Association is recruiting!
SEA is a not-for-profit, multi-stakeholder co-operative working to support the growth of the Solidarity Economy Movement. Our vision is a thriving solidarity economy for the UK – an economy based on economic and social justice, diversity and pluralism, co-operation, self-management, and ecological sustainability.
We’re looking for someone to join our passionate team of staff as an outreach worker for our Open Data and Mapping Project. This brand new role will lead on all the public-facing aspects of our Open Data and Mapping Project. The project delivers on a key pillar of our organisational strategy, which is to make the diverse organisations, initiatives and groups that are already a part of the solidarity economy movement more visible. It will meet this goal by producing data that describes these initiatives, and by creating software to display geographic maps of them.
We’re looking for a great communicator, someone who is adept at creating meaningful partnerships with organisations and people from all walks of life, and someone who has a high level of competency in the use of web technology. The role will be both challenging and incredibly rewarding, and offers the right person the opportunity to make a significant contribution towards supporting the growth of the solidarity economy movement in the UK.
If you’re interested in the role, or you know someone who might be, please visit https://www.solidarityeconomy.coop/aboutus/work-with-us for more details. Deadline for applications is Sunday, 4th February 2018.

@davehollings I was in Lidl today and saw they were the first british supermarket to give their workers a living wage. My point isn't that these jobs advertised by Cath couldn't be paid bettter (in a more ideal world), but that all this ire about jobs in small co-operatives in difficult industries is perhaps misdirected when for years there have been swathes of Group executives on 6 figures while people earn bugger all for shelf stacking.

We're always on the lookout for talented people for our tech co-op - programmers, designers, producers, etc. We're particularly interested in talented javascript programmers at the moment. We pay silly wages like the rest of the tech industry - below what a bank would pay, but then we're also trying to find time to save the world.

We work on both print and online projects which can range from branding to complex websites. We are looking for someone who feels as comfortable and excited working with paper as well as pixels.
You may be a recent graduate looking for your first real world role, or a designer with more experience who wants a fresh challenge. Either way we are looking for someone who can see the bigger picture, but doesn't forget the details.
Our work is nearly always for the third sector – charities, social enterprises and public sector organisations. We build lasting relationships with our clients and value the work they do and it's important you can empathise with their aims.

Be willing to meet clients and confidently pitch ideas to them.
Be able to write convincing presentations and express them verbally.
As a co-operative we are managed collectively, during your probation period you may be invited to attend collective meetings.
Skills
Have good Adobe CC skills across the whole package – especially Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
Good presentation skills.
Illustration, animation and any web development skills would be a bonus.
A degree in a design-related subject would be preferable but is not essential – more importantly we are looking for someone with energy, ideas and determination.

Some experience of working in an agency.
Personality
Confident but not cocky
Co-operative and non-confrontational
Independent yet collaborative
Empathetic to our clients' aims

Wave is a worker co-operative
As a co-operative, wave is controlled by the people that work in it – there are no owners or shareholders. A worker co-operative is simply a business which is operated democratically and controlled by the people who work in it. Co-operatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. Co-operative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others. Membership of the co-operative is offered following a successful probation period that usually lasts six months.
How to apply
Please apply via email. We would like you to explain your reasons for applying, why you think you are a good fit for our co-operative and what your design aspirations are. Please include your CV, a pdf of your work or links to any online work or blogs. Send your email to: [email protected] with a subject heading of 'Designer'.
Closing date: Sunday 5 July
Interviews: Week commencing 20 July
Please, no approaches from recruitment agencies.
Nathan Brown (Co-op Culture) Wed 10 Jun 2015 8:57AM
If your worker co-op isn't paying better than market wages and isn't on a trajectory towards that your co-op is probably doing something inefficiently and it should be the trigger for review and management decisions.
Kate Whittle Wed 10 Jun 2015 7:46AM
Gives the lie (at least as far as worker co-opertives are concerned) to Herzberg's theory of motivation - that people need good pay and security before they will be motivated by ethics or personal development. But we must understand that while 'younger' (excuse the generalisation) people can be motivated by ethics & opportunities for personal development, as they grow older, maybe meet a partner and want to establish a family, then obviously pay and security become more important. So if worker co-operatives want to be sustainable in the long term, and not lose people they must at least have a strategy for moving to being a living wage employer. Sorry Cath i know you said this list is not for discussions, but couldn't resist .. :-)
John Atherton Tue 9 Jun 2015 1:01PM
I'm sure there is a point at which working in a soul destroying well paid job becomes less rewarding than working in a less well paid but more personally rewarding job. But below living wage does depress me as well.
If all worker co-ops could be successful enough to pay at least the living wage, they would be in a position to pay other organisations they buy from a decent amount making everyone wealthier. Just imagine I could charge twice as much for the worker co-op weekend!.....
A waterhouse Tue 9 Jun 2015 10:31AM
It depends on what stage of development they are at , in the medium to long term you are generally right.
Dave Hollings Tue 9 Jun 2015 8:58AM
It's distressing that two of these three jobs in worker co-ops (!!!!) do not even pay the Living Wage. If worker co-ops cannot offer their members a better standard of life than investor driven businesses, then I struggle to see the point?
